Lockheed Ceo Apparent Resigns

Link to Article

Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:57

By Marjorie Censer, Published: NOVEMBER 09, 7:20 PM ET Aa Bethesda-based contracting giant Lockheed Martin said Friday that incoming chief executive Christopher E. Kubasik has resigned because of a ''lengthy, close, personal relationship with a subordinate employee.''

Marillyn A. Hewson, who was in line to become president and chief operating officer, will become chief executive of the defense contractor, effective Jan. 1.

The revelation brings Kubasik's term as chief of the company to a close before it even started. Previously Lockheed's chief operating officer and president, Kubasik had been preparing for a Jan. 1 handoff of the company's reins from chief executive Robert J. Stevens.

A Lockheed employee since 1999, he had been groomed for the chief executive job, serving previously as chief financial officer and heading the contractor's electronic systems business.

In a call with reporters Friday, Stevens, who is also Lockheed's chairman, said an employee alerted officials in October. Lockheed hired an outside firm to investigate, before asking Kubasik to resign.

''I'm deeply disappointed and genuinely saddened by Chris's actions,'' Stevens said Friday. ''We have a code of ethics and business conduct in our company that applies to every person, and having a close personal relationship with a subordinate employee clearly violates that code of conduct.''

The shake-up comes at a difficult time for the world's largest defense contractor, which has been trying to rapidly reposition itself in response to a slowdown in federal spending. In recent years, Lockheed has laid off employees, bought out top executives and consolidated facilities as it sought to slim down.

The company said the relationship would not affect the company's operational or financial performance.

Calls to Kubasik's home were not returned. Stevens, who provided limited details about the relationship, said the employee involved no longer works for Lockheed.

Lockheed's board of directors had a special meeting Friday, where, Stevens said, he recommended promoting Hewson to the role of chief executive. She has led the contractor's electronic systems unit since January 2010 and has been with Lockheed for 29 years.

She is now set to take over the chief executive role on Jan. 1. The sudden turn of events means Hewson will become the company's first female chief executive, and her ascension comes as Phebe N. Novakovic takes over as chief executive and chairman at rival Falls Church-based defense contractor General Dynamics on Jan. 1.

Stevens said Friday that the company will not start 2013 with a chief operating officer but will instead rely on its executive vice presidents, who head the company's business units.

The contractor said last month that it is splitting its electronics systems business '-- which Hewson heads '-- into two new units, missiles and fire control, and mission systems and training, as of Dec. 31. Along with aeronautics, space systems, and information systems and global solutions, it will now have five business units.

Stevens promised Friday to take an active role in the transition process throughout 2013. Although, he said, he had been phasing out his role, he, with Hewson, will ''rework that plan to some extent.''

He said Kubasik's departure should create no lasting problems for Lockheed.

''I don't believe the company's in crisis,'' he told reporters. ''We've acted cleanly, clearly and decisively. .'‰.'‰. The very good news is that we have a significant bench strength of executive talent in this company.''

Remarks by Director David H. Petraeus at In-Q-Tel CEO Summit -- Central Intelligence Agency

As you all know, exploiting the intelligence opportunities--which is an easier subject to discuss in an unclassified setting than the counterintelligence challenges--will require a new class of in-place and remote sensors that operate across the electromagnetic spectrum. Moreover, these sensors will be increasingly interconnected.

The current "Internet of PCs" will move, of course, toward an "Internet of Things"--of devices of all types--50 to 100 billion of which will be connected to the Internet by 2020. As you know, whereas machines in the 19th century learned to do, and those in the 20th century learned to think at a rudimentary level, in the 21st century, they are learning to perceive--to actually sense and respond. Key applications developed by our In-Q-Tel investment companies are focused on technologies that are driving the Internet of Things. These include:

Item identification, or devices engaged in tagging;

Sensors and wireless sensor networks--devices that indeed sense and respond;

Embedded systems--those that think and evaluate;

And, finally, nanotechnology, allowing these devices to be small enough to function virtually anywhere.

Items of interest will be located, identified, monitored, and remotely controlled through technologies such as radio-frequency identification, sensor networks, tiny embedded servers, and energy harvesters--all connected to the next-generation Internet using abundant, low cost, and high-power computing--the latter now going to cloud computing, in many areas greater and greater supercomputing, and, ultimately, heading to quantum computing.

Three House Democrats Burgled | Heard on the Hill

By Neda SemnaniPosted at 5:11 p.m. on Nov. 8

It was the best of times, and, for three Democratic Members of Congress, it may have been sort of the worst of times, as well.

In the wake of a successful election night, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (Calif.) vacation home and Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich's district home were burgled '-- the Californian's twice '-- and Michigan Rep. Hansen Clarke's Detroit office was broken into sometime late Wednesday night or early this morning.

''They stole three laptops, two camcorders, a camera, a Blackberry,'' Clarke tells HOH. All constituent personal information is safe, he says.

''Apparently, they jimmied the front-door lock,'' Clarke says. ''But, just so you know, our office is in a large building that has restaurants, banquet halls, things like that. It's in downtown Detroit. But our office was the only one broken into.''

The Congressman says he thinks the perpetrators targeted his office specifically.

''I do have a suspicion that our break-in could be politically motivated,'' the Congressman says. ''I'm hounded daily by political people who want to know what my plans are after my term is over with.''

Over the weekend, Kucinich's Cleveland home was ransacked.

''[W]hoever did this went through the house systematically,'' Kucinich told FOX News Cleveland. ''Everything has been gone through, papers rifled, just everything.''

''I don't have any idea what they could have been looking for,'' he continued. ''But whatever it was, it's going to take me weeks to figure out what might be missing, and I already know that some things are.''

Both Kucinich and Clarke will be leaving Congress after this term.

Pelosi, who is not leaving Congress, had her Napa County vacation home broken into twice this week, once on Monday evening and a second time on Election Day.

On Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Kevin Michael Hagan, 21, admitted to the break-ins. Police say Hagan also allegedly burgled four other homes in the area. He said he didn't know that it was Pelosi's home.

HOH has contacted Capitol Police for information about whether the Pelosi, Kucinich and Clarke burglaries are related.

Or maybe it's just a weird coincidence.

Pentagon releases Benghazi timeline, defends response

WASHINGTON: Pentagon leaders knew of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi an hour after it began, but were unable to mobilize reinforcements based in Europe in time to prevent the death of the U.S. ambassador, according to a timeline released on Friday.

Senior defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, rejected criticism accusing the Pentagon of failing to move quickly to send reinforcements to relieve the consulate or using armed aerial drones to fire on the attackers.

"The Department of Defense acted quickly after learning of the incidents unfolding in Benghazi," said one official, adding that Marines, special forces and other military assets had either been employed or put in motion during the attack.

"Unfortunately, no alternative or additional aircraft options were available within a timeline to be effective," the official added.

The Obama administration's response to the attack became a highly charged political issue in the last weeks of the presidential campaign. The CIA, which had a base near the consulate, and the State Department have released timelines on the incident.

According to the Pentagon's timeline, the military's Africa Command, based in Europe, ordered an unmanned, unarmed surveillance drone diverted to the city in eastern Libya just 17 minutes after the attack on the consulate began about 9:42 p.m. local time (3:42 p.m. EDT), the first military action in response to the incident. It took the drone more than an hour to arrive at the scene.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's office was notified of the attack 50 minutes after it began, and Panetta learned of it shortly thereafter as he and the military's top general headed to a previously scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.

Obama, Panetta and Army General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, discussed potential responses to the unfolding events in Benghazi during their meeting, which began 78 minutes after the start of the Libya attack, according to the timeline.

Panetta and Dempsey then returned to the Pentagon and began a two-hour series of meetings with General Carter Ham, head of Africa Command, and other senior military leaders from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT (12 a.m. to 2 a.m. Libya time) to organize responses to the attack.

But as they arrived at the Pentagon, the surviving personnel from the consulate in Benghazi were being evacuated by a CIA team that arrived from a nearby base, about two hours after the start of the attack. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was missing.

Stevens' body was found at a local hospital. He apparently died of asphyxiation in the smoke-filled diplomatic compound after it was set ablaze by the attackers. Stevens and three other U.S. personnel died in the attack on the consulate and a nearby CIA annex.

"When initial reports came in, we knew the ambassador could not be reached," a senior defense official told reporters. "We were looking at the possibility of a potential hostage-rescue scenario, for instance. So we didn't know if this was going to be an hours-long event or a days-long even or longer."

During the meetings, the group formulated a response to the attack and gave verbal orders to prepare to deploy two teams of Marine anti-terrorism troops, used for providing security, and two special forces units, one based in Europe and the other in the United States.

One Marine Corps Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, or FAST team, was designated for the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli and the other for the consulate in Benghazi. The special forces units were ordered to prepare to go to a staging base in Europe.

As the Pentagon meetings got under way, a six-man security team from the embassy in Tripoli, which included two Defense Department personnel, left for Benghazi, landing at the airport at 1:30 a.m Libya time (7:30 p.m. EDT).

A CIA timeline released last week said that team was held up at the airport trying to organize transportation and locate the missing U.S. ambassador.

The team from Tripoli got to the CIA base in Benghazi, at about 5:15 a.m. Libya time (11:15 p.m. EDT), arriving at the start of a mortar attack by militants that killed two U.S. security officers.

An hour after that, a Libyan military unit arrived at the CIA base and helped evacuate all U.S. personnel and the bodies of Stevens and the other slain Americans.

Mike Morell to testify instead of David Petraeus on Benghazi - Seung Min Kim - POLITICO.com

A spokesman for the committee said acting CIA Director Mike Morell would testify Thursday in place of Petraeus, who resigned Friday after admitting to an extramarital affair.

Petraeus was among a host of intelligence officials who were on tap to appear at the closed hearing, including James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, and Matthew Olsen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center. The hearing is the second to be held by the Senate panel on the attacks that killed Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three diplomatic aides.

Michael Morell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael J. Morell (born 1958) is the current Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, his second time in that role, having served as Acting Director the year before, in 2011. In May 2010, Morell was sworn in as the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, succeeding Stephen Kappes.[1] As stated, from July 1[2] to September 6, 2011, he served his first stint as Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, following the appointment of Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense. On November 9, 2012, Morell once again became Acting Director following the resignation of General David Petraeus, following an extramarital affair.[3] President Obama plans to nominate him as the Director.[4]

Morell is a native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.[5] He joined the CIA in 1980. He was chief of the CIA's division on Asia, Pacific and Latin America.[6] Most of his work in the agency was devoted to Asian projects.[5] He also managed the staff that produced the Presidential Daily Briefings for President George W. Bush.[5][6] Before his 2010 nomination as Deputy Director, Morell served as Director for Intelligence, a position he had held since 2008. Before that, he served as the CIA's first Associate Deputy Director from 2006 to 2008.

By JOSEPH FITSANAKIS | intelNews.org |'–º'–ºHow did Petraeus' affair come to light? CIA Director David Petraeus resigned after a probe into whether someone else was using his email. The probe eventually led to the discovery that he was having an extramarital affair, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cites ''several people briefed on the matter''. An FBI inquiry into the use of Petraeus's Gmail account led agents to believe the woman or someone close to her had sought access to his email. An extramarital affair has significant implications for an official in a highly sensitive post, such as that held by Petraeus, because it can open an official to blackmail.'–º'–ºWho did Petraeus have an affair with? The woman with whom General David Petraeus was having an affair is Paula Broadwell, a West Point graduate and the author of a recent hagiographic book about him, entitled All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, co-written with Vernon Loeb. Slate's Fred Kaplan reports that ''it had long been rumored that something was going on between Petraeus and Broadwell. When she was embedded with him in Afghanistan, they went on frequent 5-mile runs together. But Petraeus went on 5-mile runs with many reporters, and few people who knew him took the rumors seriously''.'–º'–ºWho is leading the CIA now? With General David Petraeus stepping down as director of the CIA, following reports of an extra-marital affair, the agency's current deputy director will take over as director on an interim basis. His name is Michael Morell, and he was a senior CIA aide in the White House to President George W. Bush. Morell had served as deputy director since May 2010, after holding a number of senior roles, including director for the agency's analytical arm, which helps feed intelligence into the President's Daily Brief. He also worked as an aide to former CIA Director George Tenet.

By now, unless your TV, radio or computer is on the fritz, you heard that CIA Director David Petraeus resigned for diddling his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Her ironically titled book, ''ALL IN,'' probably should have been renamed, ''ALL THE WAY IN.'' But this is a sideshow.

The story is confusing and conflicting. First, we are informed that the FBI was investigating Broadwell for illegally accessing the CIA Director's email accounts. Since she was the authorized biographer, that seems a bit strange. And how did the FBI learn that she was ''illegally accessing'' Petraeus' email? That is very curious.

Second, we are told that the FBI was investigating Petraeus? For what? Leaking intel to David Ignatius? Seems very odd.

The story is circulating that the White House had this dirt on Petraeus and tried to use it to pressure him to keep mum on the Benghazi failure or take the blame. Petraeus, not willing surrender to this threat, reportedly took the pre-emptive step of outing himself and resigning.

What is the Benghazi secret the White House is trying to hide?

Was the activity at the Annex was not an authorized, covert intelligence operation? The word is circulating among retired CIA officers that it was not. Legally, the President must produce a finding to run a cover operation (please see USC 'º Title 50 'º Chapter 15 'º Subchapter III 'º § 413b 50 USC § 413b '' Presidential approval and reporting of covert actions).

What if the White House was involved in an off-the-books operation to gather and ship weapons to Syria for the Syrian rebels and was using a foreign firm to carry out the activity under the direction of the White House? Did Petraeus know about this? Was Petraeus being asked to take responsibility for this or cover it up?

Lots of unanswered questions. But one thing is certain''the story put out today about the reason for the Petraeus resignation is not the real story.

Did Paula Broadwell's Cuckolded Husband Write a Letter to Chuck Klosterman in the The New York Times?

Link to Article

Sun, 11 Nov 2012 05:00

In the July 13th edition of Klosterman's The Ethicist advice column for the New York Times, an anonymous reader wrote in seeking advice about an affair his wife was having with a "government executive" whose job "is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership." The anonymous reader went on to praise the government executive as "gracious" and "absolutely the right person for the job." He then asked if he should acknowledge the affair or let it continue until the project succeeds. Sounds like the government executive could hold a position like, say, the director of the CIA, right? In other words, did Paula Broadwell's husband know about her affair with David Petraeus and then turn to, of all people, Chuck Klosterman for advice? Maybe!

Let's look at the facts. The reader says he's "watched the affair intensify over the last year," which matches the Wall Street Journal's timeline of the affair (August 2011 until "several months ago"). It also makes sense that Broadwell's husband would have some idea about the affair considering she apparently was always off jogging with Petraeus, not to mention the fact that she's spent a good deal of her career worshipping/writing "fan fiction" about the former general.

And since the reader asked Klosterman for help, we have to assume he'd at least consider the writer's advice, which was:

Don't expose the affair in any high-profile way. It would be different if this man's project was promoting some (contextually hypocritical) family-values platform, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The only motive for exposing the relationship would be to humiliate him and your wife, and that's never a good reason for doing anything. This is between you and your spouse. You should tell her you want to separate, just as you would if she were sleeping with the mailman. The idea of "suffering in silence" for the good of the project is illogical. How would the quiet divorce of this man's mistress hurt an international leadership initiative? He'd probably be relieved.

So maybe that's why the affair ended several months ago? Because of Chuck Klosterman? Did Chuck Klosterman's wisdom trigger a series of events that would eventually lead to the resignation of the director of the CIA?

It should be noted that Klosterman was suspicious of the letter writer's motives: "I halfway suspect you're writing this letter because you want specific people to read this column and deduce who is involved and what's really going on behind closed doors (without actually addressing the conflict in person). That's not ethical, either."

If any of this story is true, and I vote yes, it is all true, then one thing is for sure: Chuck Klosterman is an American hero.

Members of the U.S. Secret Service look on as President Obama meets with'...

CHARLIE WELLS

Saturday, November 03, 2012

One of President Obama'‚¬'s top Secret Service agents has died in an apparent suicide.

Rafael Prieto, 47, was a married father who had confessed to cheating with a Mexican woman for nearly six years, a secret under investigation for allegedly violating agency rules that require disclosure of relationships with foreign nationals.

A member of the Secret Service for more than two decades assigned to the agency'‚¬'s most prestigious post as the President'‚¬'s protective detail, Prieto was found inside a car parked in a Northwest Washington, D.C. apartment complex garage last week, dead of what authorities believe to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

RELATED: FIRST PHOTOS OF HOOKER AT CENTER OF SECRET SERVICE SCANDAL

His affair came to light in the wake of a separate incident that rocked the Secret Service this spring, when over a dozen personnel '‚¬'' supposed to be preparing for Obama'‚¬'s visit to Cartagena, Colombia '‚¬'' were implicated in a prostitution scandal that went public when one agency employee refused to pay a prostitute for her services and started arguing with her in a hotel hallway.

An employee who worried the Secret Service was not uniformly enforcing its rules after that incident revealed Prieto'‚¬'s relationship, which was not connected to the prostitution scandal, The Associated Press reported.

As a part of the agency'‚¬'s investigation into Prieto'‚¬'s relationship, his access to Secret Service facilities and his security clearance had been suspended, a law enforcement source told CBS News.

"Rafael Prieto had a distinguished 20-year career with the Secret Service that was marked by accomplishment, dedication and friendships," agency spokesman Edwin Donovan said. "The Secret Service is mourning the loss of a valued colleague."

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating Prieto'‚¬'s death.

Obama Topples Top Coup Leader After Washington Gunbattle

By:Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) is reporting today that President Barack Obama has accelerated the purge of US Military officers involved in a coup against his regime by the ''firing in disgrace'' of former Four-Star Army General and current Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) David Petraeus [photo 2nd left] yesterday.

According to this report, after his refusal to meet at the White House with Obama this past week, US Federal Forces loyal to the President stopped General Petraeus' vehicle in DuPont Circle in Washington D.C. yesterday (Friday) morning whereupon a short gun battle ensued (Washington D.C. police are reporting this incident as an attempted robbery). General Petraeus was, then, apprehended, brought before Obama and forced to resign in disgrace over his supposedly admitting to an extramarital affair.

General Petraeus's toppling follows similar attacks by the Obama regime in the past 3 weeks that has seen the unprecedented ouster of many top US Military leaders including Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, US Army General Carter Ham, Brigadier General Jeffery A. Sinclair, and US Navy Commander Joseph E. Darlak, all of whom we had previously reported on in our reports ''Obama Coup Plot Slams Into Russia'' and ''Obama Fires Top Admiral As Coup Plot Fears Grows.''

GRU analysts in this report say that Obama's moves against his rebellious military most closely resembles those actions taken by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 against those involved in what is now referred to as ''The Business Plot'' engineered by wealthy American businessmen who were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization and use it in a coup d'(C)tat to overthrow the US government.

Under great pressure to jail and charge with treason many top US Military officers after the failed 1933 coup attempt, this report says, Roosevelt, instead, opted to simply oust those Generals and other high-ranking officers in order to spare his country the turmoil such a revelation would cause among the American people.

Most ominous, however, in this report is it, likewise, comparing Obama's ouster of General Petraeus to the 1961 firing of CIA Director Allen Dulles (1893-1969) by President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963). Though never proven, it is believed by many that Dulles ordered the assassination of Kennedy after a cryptic assassination directive was found in a leaked document in 2009, and in what can only be termed as ironic, Dulles was a central member of the Warren Commission investigation into Kennedy's assassination that blamed this shocking murder on a ''lone gunman.''

Unbeknownst to General Petraeus, or the other coup-plotters, this report continues, Obama had ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to begin conducting covert human and electronic surveillance against hundreds of US Military officers when this coup plot was discovered.

The coups ''master plan'', this GRU report says, was for US Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney to be assassinated just prior to the 6 November election whereupon General Petraeus would become the Republican candidate under their party's rules allowing him to be put into Romney's place by a majority of State Representatives as allowed under RNC party rules.

If such a scenario were allowed to occur, this report continues, General Petraeus would have most certainly became the next President of The United States due to his unprecedented popularity with the American people.

Important to note is that the only US mainstream media outlet attempting to report on this coup attempt was the magazine GQ, who in an article this past week, written by Marc Ambinder, detailed the massive security forces ordered by Obama to be put around both himself and Romney during the final weeks of the election and the many assassination attempts that were, likewise, foiled.

Unfortunately for Ambinder, however, are the many attacks he is currently undergoing for his daring to ''lift the lid'' on these coup plots and the pressure he's under to release the sources for his information. In a response to these attacks against him via Twitter about his sources Ambinder cryptically stated, ''There was that guy who shot at the White House from across the ellipse, and then the soldiers arrested for plotting the assassination of the president and others.''

This GRU report further states that Obama had his ''hand forced'' this week when General Petraeus ordered the CIA to begin releasing information damaging to his regime, including a timeline on the Benghazi Libya attack that conflicted with the White House, and previously kept secret information on an American drone fired upon by Iran in the week prior to the election.

Should the true stories about either, or both, of these events been made known to the American people prior to the election, this report says, Obama could have been defeated. However, due to the complicity of the propaganda US media the full facts regarding them have yet to become fully known.

General Petraeus's main downfall, this report says, was due to emails obtained by the FBI written by his loyal confidant and biographer Paula Broadwell[photo 2nd left] detailing ''critical elements'' of this coup-plot.

Most important to note about the FBI's obtaining of these emails, however, was that they were not recovered from Broadwell, but were, instead, obtained from the Russian Defense Ministry, and as we had previously reported on, and led to President Putin's firing of Defense Minster Anatoly Serdyukov this past week.

To the most important context surrounding this historic battle between an American President and the US Military we had previously detailed in our 22 July report titled ''Obama Plan To Shatter ''Permanent War Economy'' Panics Global Elites'', and which the first move to do so was made by Obama within hours of his winning his reelection when he notified the United Nations that The United States would now back an international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global conventional arms trade.

As Obama has now become only the second US President in over half a century, since Kennedy, to battle against the American Military-Industrial-Complex, the outcome is far from certain, this GRU report conclusion warns, as the US Military and their defense allies show no signs of surrendering.

WASHINGTON - Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

He was a lieutenant general working on a counterinsurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq. The university had invited him to give a speech.

Broadwell was in the Army Reserve after being recalled three times to active duty since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to work on counterterrorism issues and intended to return to active duty or get into the policy world, according to the preface of the Petraeus biography she would later write with a Washington Post editor.

Petraeus, who held much-praised military commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned Friday after admitting he had an extramarital affair, a disclosure that ended the retired four-star general's civilian career as director of the CIA.

He carried on the affair with Broadwell, now 40, according to several U.S. officials with knowledge of the situation who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss publicly the investigation that led to the resignation. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account, two of the officials said.

Broadwell wrote in the preface to "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," published by Penguin in January, that while at Harvard, Petraeus passed along his card and offered to help her academic work on leadership.

"I later discovered that he was famous for this type of mentoring and networking, especially with aspiring soldier-scholars," Broadwell wrote, adding that "I took full advantage of his open-door policy to seek insight and share perspectives."

Broadwell is a research associate at Harvard's Center for Public Leadership and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, according to her biography on Penguin's website. According to the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer, she grew up in North Dakota and moved to Charlotte more than three years ago with her husband, a radiologist, and their two young sons.

The book began as research for her dissertation, a case study of Petraeus' leadership. It evolved into an authorized biography written with Washington Post editor Vernon Loeb after President Barack Obama put Petraeus in charge of Afghanistan in 2010.

Two years earlier, she wrote in the book's preface, while visiting Washington he had invited her to join him and his team for a run along the Potomac River.

"I'd earned varsity letters in cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and finished at the top of my class for athletics at West Point; I wanted to see if he could keep stride during an interview. Instead it became a test for me," she wrote. He eventually increased the pace "until the talk turned to heavy breathing, and we reached a 6-minute-per-mile pace. It was a signature Petraeus move. I think I passed the test, but I didn't bother to transcribe the interview."

In the Army Reserve, she specialized in military intelligence, spending time at the U.S. Special Operations Command and the FBI Counterterrorism Task Forces before pursuing an academic career, according to her Penguin biography. She "lived, worked, or travelled in more than 60 countries during more than 15 years of military service and work in geopolitical analysis and counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations," her biography states.

Broadwell made multiple trips to Afghanistan, with unprecedented access to Petraeus, and also spent time with his commanders across the country.

When Petraeus left the military and took the job at the CIA, Broadwell kept in contact with him and sometimes was invited to his office for events such as his meeting with actress Angelina Jolie.

"History has yet to fully judge Petraeus' service in Iraq and Afghanistan, his impact on the U.S. military and his rank among America's wartime leaders," Broadwell wrote in the preface. "But there is no denying that he achieved a great deal during his 37-year Army career, not the least of which was regaining the strategic initiative in both wars" after Sept. 11, 2001.

"His critics fault him for ambition and self-promotion. I will note in the pages that follow that he is driven and goal-oriented, but his energy, optimism and will to win stand out more for me than the qualities seized on by his critics."

With the book done, Broadwell told friends she was returning to her dissertation, using part of her research on Petraeus to complete her doctorate.

Massive Explosion Reported After CIA Drone Targets Indianapolis

By:Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers

A chilling report circulating in the Kremlin this afternoon released by the Aerospace Defence Forces (VKO) states that Kosmos 2479 detected the firing of two AGM-114 Hellfire missiles from a MQ-1 Predator drone yesterday being operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) over the United States city of Indianapolis that resulted in a massive explosion [photo 2nd left], and from local US media reports resulted in at least two deaths.

Kosmos 2479 is an early warning satellite launched in 2012 as part of the VKO's Oko programme and monitors the US from geostationary orbit for all possible threats, including the tracking of American airspace for US Air Force and CIA fighter jets, bombers and drones.

The CIA's MQ-1 Predator drones, equipped with two fearsome AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, have been described as President Obama's ''weapon of choice'' and are currently most noted for bringing to Pakistan the same horror that Hitler's doodlebugs inflicted on London during World War II.

According to this report, after the firing of these drone-missiles, two distinct trajectories were recorded which were ''near simultaneously countermanded'' by countermeasures employed by an AN/ALQ-99 airborne electronic warfare system aboard a US Air Force EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft that had been dispatched from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to track this CIA drone that had, apparently, deviated from its assigned flight track.

Most ominous in this VKO report is its stating that the ''intended targets'' of these Hellfire missiles were the US Army Resource Services (PPBES) and the US Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), both located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The PPBES is tasked with overseeing critical, mandated, and/or sensitive US Defense and Army-wide programs including foreign currency fluctuation accounts, Individual Ready Reserve Mobilization of American Armed Forces, and is responsible for the evacuation of civilians in case of threats to the United States.

The DFAS pays all US Defense Department (DoD) military and civilian personnel, retirees and annuitants, as well as major DoD contractors and vendors. DFAS also supports customers outside the DoD in support of electronic government initiatives. These customers include the Executive Office of the President, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

Should the attack on either the PPBES or DFAS been successful, VKO analysts in this report say, the US Military establishment would have suffered a ''critical blow'' at the same time it is managing multiple wars across the globe, along with growing evidence of an internal power struggle between it and the newly reelected President Obama.

Important to note is that this attack, likewise, comes within hours of Obama toppling one of the top generals believed to be leading the coup against him, and as we had detailed in our previous report titled ''Obama Topples Top Coup Leader After Washington Gunbattle.''

As we had noted in that report, the toppling by Obama of General David Petraeus matched other top US Military leaders he has purged in the past 3 weeks, and which include: Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, US Army General Carter Ham, Brigadier General Jeffery A. Sinclair, and US Navy Commander Joseph E. Darlak.

To how powerful the explosion was when these Hellfire missiles hit the ground in Indianapolis we can read, in part, as reported by the local WTHR.com news service, and which says:

''Two people were killed and about two dozen homes were damaged by an explosion in a south side Indianapolis neighborhood late Saturday night. The explosion was reported shortly after 11 p.m. near South Sherman Drive and Stop 11 Road on the south side of Indianapolis.

Bonnie Hensley with the Indianapolis Fire Department says the original explosion was on Fieldfare Way in the Richmond Hill subdivision. Homes on both sides of Alcona Drive were damaged. She added that more than 100 firefighters responded to the fire. IFD has confirmed at least two people died in the explosion. Fire officials say the victims were in one or both of the houses that were destroyed by the explosion.''

Curiously to note in this reports conclusion is that this attack, should it have been successful, ''nearly mirrors'' that of the 11 September 2001 strike on the United States that Russian intelligence analysts still maintain was the ''opening salvo'' of a global economic war.

Unbeknownst to the American people are that in the weeks prior to the 9/11 attacks, the entire western-backed global economic system was on the brink of total collapse due to massive fraud charges set to be filed against all of the top banks in the United States, but whose evidence was ''conveniently'' destroyed with the collapse of World Trade Building 7 which had not even been attacked.

To the final outcome of these grim events now occurring in the United States it is not in our knowing, other than to note'...and with each passing day'...the situation for those in power, especially those who end up on the losing side, more closely resembles controlled chaos than anything else.

Stock certificates feared damaged by Sandy - The Buzz - Investment and Stock Market News

Trillions of dollars worth of stock certificates and other paper securities that were stored in a vault in lower Manhattan may have suffered water damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The Depository Trust & Clearing Corp., an industry-run clearing house for Wall Street, said the contents of its vault "are likely damaged," after its building at 55 Water Street "sustained significant water damage" from the storm that battered New York City's financial district earlier this week.

The vault contains certificates registered to Cede & Co., a subsidiary of DTCC, as well as "custody certificates" in sealed envelopes that belong to clients.

The DTCC provides "custody and asset servicing" for more than 3.6 million securities worth an estimated $36.5 trillion, according to its website.

"At this point, it is premature to make an accurate assessment as to the full impact of the water damage nor would it be helpful to project on what specific actions need to be taken with respect to our vault," said DTCC Chief Executive Michael Bodson in a statement. "We are aggressively working on this situation to minimize disruption to our clients and will provide additional updates as more information becomes available."

Related: Sandy's cost to the economy: Up to $50 billion

Bodson said the DTCC's computer records are intact and that the corporation has "detailed inventory files of the contents of the vault."

The building remains inaccessible, but the lower floors are believed to be flooded. The full extent of the damage cannot be assessed until power is restored and the building is deemed safe to enter.

The DTCC has been operating from remote facilities since the onset of the storm and has maintained clearing, settlement and other services that are crucial to the functioning of Wall Street, according to Bodson.

Your Interview with the President - 2012 - [VIDEO]

Is This Child Dead Enough for You?

Link to Article

Source: Counterpunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names » article

To all those now hailing the re-election of Barack Obama as a triumph of decent, humane, liberal values over the oozing-postule perfidy of the Republicans, a simple question:

Is this child dead enough for you?

This little boy was named Naeemullah. He was in his house '-- maybe playing, maybe sleeping, maybe having a meal '-- when an American drone missile was fired into the residential area where he lived and blew up the house next door.

As we all know, these drone missiles are, like the president who wields them, super-smart, a triumph of technology and technocratic expertise. We know, for the president and his aides have repeatedly told us, that these weapons '-- launched only after careful consultation of the just-war strictures of St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas '-- strike nothing but their intended targets and kill no one but ''bad guys.'' Indeed, the president's top aides have testified under oath that not a single innocent person has been among the thousands of Pakistani civilians '-- that is, civilians of a sovereign nation that is not at war with the United States '-- who have been killed by the drone missile campaign of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

Yet somehow, by some miracle, the missile that roared into the residential area where Naeemullah lived did not confine itself neatly to the house it struck. Somehow, inexplicably, the hunk of metal and wire and computer processors failed '-- in this one instance '-- to look into the souls of all the people in the village and ascertain, by magic, which ones were ''bad guys'' and then kill only them. Somehow '-- perhaps the missile had been infected with Romney cooties? '-- this supercharged hunk of high explosives simply, well, exploded with tremendous destructive power when it struck the residential area, blowing the neighborhood to smithereens.

As Wired reports, shrapnel and debris went flying through the walls of Naeemullah's house and ripped through his small body. When the attack was over '-- when the buzzing drone sent with Augustinian wisdom by the Peace Laureate was no longer lurking over the village, shadowing the lives of every defenseless inhabitant with the terrorist threat of imminent death, Naeemullah was taken to the hospital in a nearby town.

This is where the picture of above was taken by Noor Behram, a resident of North Waziristan who has been chronicling the effects of the Peace Laureate's drone war. When the picture was taken, Naeemullah was dying. He died an hour later.

He died.

Is he dead enough for you?

Dead enough not to disturb your victory dance in any way? Dead enough not to trouble the inauguration parties yet to come? Dead enough not to diminish, even a little bit, your exultant glee at the fact that this great man, a figure of integrity, decency, honor and compassion, will be able to continue his noble leadership of the best nation in the history of the world?

Do you have children? Do they sit your house playing happily? Do they sleep sweetly scrunched up in their warm beds at night? Do they chatter and prattle like funny little birds as you eat with them at the family table? Do you love them? Do you treasure them? Do you consider them fully-fledged human beings, beloved souls of infinite worth?

How would you feel if you saw them ripped to shreds by flying shrapnel, in your own house? How would you feel as you rushed them to the hospital, praying every step of the way that another missile won't hurl down on you from the sky? Your child was innocent, you had done nothing, were simply living your life in your own house '-- and someone thousands of miles away, in a country you had never seen, had no dealings with, had never harmed in any way, pushed a button and sent chunks of burning metal into your child's body. How would you feel as you watched him die, watched all your hopes and dreams for him, all the hours and days and years you would have to love him, fade away into oblivion, lost forever?

What would you think about the one who did this to your child? Would you say: ''What a noble man of integrity and decency! I'm sure he is acting for the best.''

Would you say: ''Well, this is a bit unfortunate, but it's perfectly understandable. The Chinese government (or Iran or al Qaeda or North Korea or Russia, etc. etc.) believed there was someone next door to me who might possibly at some point in time pose some kind of threat in some unspecified way to their people or their political agenda '-- or maybe it was just that my next-door neighbor behaved in a certain arbitrarily chosen way that indicated to people watching him on a computer screen thousands of miles away that he might possibly be the sort of person who might conceivably at some point in time pose some kind of unspecified threat to the Chinese (Iranians/Russians, etc.), even though they had no earthly idea who my neighbour is or what he does or believes or intends. I think the person in charge of such a program is a good, wise, decent man that any person would be proud to support. Why, I think I'll ask him to come speak at my little boy's funeral!''

Is that what you would say if shrapnel from a missile blew into your comfortable house and killed your own beloved little boy? You would not only accept, understand, forgive, shrug it off, move on '-- you would actively support the person who did it, you would cheer his personal triumphs and sneer at all those who questioned his moral worthiness and good intentions? Is that really what you would do?

Well, that is what you are doing when you shrug off the murder of little Naeemullah. You are saying he is not worth as much as your child. You are saying he is not a fully-fledged human being, a beloved soul of infinite worth. You are saying that you support his death, you are happy about it, and you want to see many more like it. You are saying it doesn't matter if this child '-- or a hundred like him, or a thousand like him, or, as in the Iraqi sanctions of the old liberal lion, Bill Clinton, five hundred thousand children like Naeemullah '-- are killed in your name, by leaders you cheer and support. You are saying that the only thing that matters is that someone from your side is in charge of killing these children. This is the reality of ''lesser evilism.''

***

Before the election, we heard a lot of talk about this notion of the ''lesser evil.'' From prominent dissidents and opponents of empire like Daniel Ellsberg and Noam Chomsky and Robert Parry to innumerable progressive blogs to personal conversations, one heard this basic argument: ''Yes, the drone wars, the gutting of civil liberties, the White House death squads and all the rest are bad; but Romney would be worse. Therefore, with great reluctance, holding our noses and shaking our heads sadly, we must choose the lesser evil of Obama and vote accordingly.''

I understand that argument, I really do. I don't agree with it, as I made plain here many times before the election. I think the argument is wrong, I think our system is so far gone that even a ''lesser evil'' is too evil to support in any way, that such support only perpetuates the system's unconscionable evils. But I'm not a purist, not a puritan, not a commissar or dogmatist. I understand that people of good will can come to a different conclusion, and feel that they must reluctantly choose one imperial-militarist-corporate faction over the other, in the belief that this will mean some slight mitigation of the potential evil that the other side commit if it took power. I used to think that way myself, years ago. Again, I now disagree with this, and I think that the good people who believe this have not, for whatever reason or reasons, looked with sufficient clarity at the reality of our situation, of what is actually being done, in their name, by the political faction they support.

But of course, I am not the sole arbiter of reality, nor a judge of others; people see what they see, and they act (or refrain from acting) accordingly. I understand that. But here is what I don't understand: the sense of triumph and exultation and glee on the part of so many progressives and liberals and 'dissidents' at the victory of this ''lesser evil.'' Where did the reluctance, the nose-holding, the sad head-shaking go? Should they not be mourning the fact that evil has triumphed in America, even if, by their lights, it is a ''lesser'' evil?

If you really believed that Obama was a lesser evil '-- 2 percent less evil, as I believe Digby once described the Democrats in 2008 '-- if you really did find the drone wars and the White House death squads and Wall Street bailouts and absolution for torturers and all the rest to be shameful and criminal, how can you be happy that all of this will continue? Happy '-- and continuing to scorn anyone who opposed the perpetuation of this system.

The triumph of a lesser evil is still a victory for evil. If your neighborhood is tyrannized by warring mafia factions, you might prefer that the faction which occasionally doles out a few free hams wins out over their more skinflint rivals; but would you be joyful about the fact that your neighborhood is still being tyrannized by murderous criminals? Would you not be sad, cast down, discouraged and disheartened to see the violence and murder and corruption go on? Would you not mourn the fact that your children will have to grow up in the midst of all this?

So where is the mourning for the fact that we, as a nation, have come to this: a choice between murderers, a choice between plunderers? Even if you believe that you had to participate and make the horrific choice that was being offered to us '-- ''Do you want the Democrat to kill these children, or do you want the Republican to kill these children?'' '-- shouldn't this post-election period be a time of sorrow, not vaulting triumph and giddy glee and snarky put-downs of the ''losers''?

If you really are a ''lesser evilist'' '-- if this was a genuine moral choice you reluctantly made, and not a rationalization for indulging in unexamined, primitive partisanship '-- then you will know that we are ALL the losers of this election. Even if you believe it could have been worse, it is still very bad. You yourself proclaimed that Obama was evil '-- just a bit ''lesser'' so than his opponent. (2 percent maybe.) And so the evil that you yourself saw and named and denounced will go on. Again I ask: where is the joy and glory and triumph in this? Even if you believe it was unavoidable, why celebrate it? And ask yourself, bethink yourself: what are you celebrating? This dead child, and a hundred like him? A thousand like him? Five hundred thousand like him? How far will you go? What won't you celebrate?

And so step by step, holding the hand of the ''lesser evil,'' we descend deeper and deeper into the pit.

NFL Terror Attacks Coming Any Given Sunday Truther.Org

NFL Terror: Any Given Sunday

Truther.orgNovember 10, 2012David Chase Taylor

While an NFL terror attack could come any given Sunday, it will most likely come in bunches (coordinated attacks on multiple NFL stadiums at the same time), during the playoffs, or at an upcoming Super Bowl. The goal of an NFL terror attack would be to garner a political mandate for Obama post-election, give Obama a reason to invade Africa or the Middle East, install draconian police-state measures throughout America, create a reason to implement martial law, and potentially foment a civil-war in America.

One particular date of interest is this Sunday, November 11, 2012, when Veterans Day will be celebrated in America. Aside from the NFL's month-long pro-war propaganda campaign entitled 'Salute to Service', the NCAA is also honoring the U.S. military with its inaugural Armed Forces Classic men's basketball game at U.S. Ramstein Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany. Although another NCAA military event in South Carolina entitled the Carrier Classic was suspiciously canceled, a new NCAA men's basketball game has been scheduled for this Sunday, November 11, 2012, on the flight deck of the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Midway in San Diego, California, a city blinking red on every level of false-flag terrorism.

The marriage between American sports and the U.S. military has been propagandized via ESPN this entire week and should a terror attack occur on Veterans Day at either an NFL or NCAA event, a majority of the U.S. military will likely watch it happen. All veterans and active duty U.S. service men and women have been invited by Applebee's, a national restaurant chain, for a free meal on Veterans Day to honor their service to America. Due to the gratis meals, military personal will likely flood to Applebee's in droves, spend lots of money on drinks, and watch Sunday's sporting events, namely NFL football. It appears that the U.S. military, the NFL, the NCAA, ESPN, ABC Sports and Applebee's have colluded in order to make Veteran's Day 2012 a day that will live in infamy.

NFL's 'Salute to Service'The NFL is dedicating the entire month of November to the U.S. military in what is being called 'Salute to Service', a pro-war propaganda campaign started in 2011. According to reports, ''The National Football League will continue its long history of honoring veterans and active duty members of the military with its annual 'Salute to Service' campaign'' which is ''designed to unify and elevate the extensive military appreciation work of the NFL and its clubs''. All 32 NFL teams have designated one home game to honor the U.S. military in which teams will be forced to display a number of 'Salute To Service'-branded elements in their stadiums including goal post wraps, pylons with camouflage ribbon decals, wall banners with the words 'Salute To in the back of the end zone, camouflage ribbon lapel pins, camouflage Gatorade towels, camouflage Nike and Under Armour gloves for players, camouflage captain's patches and camouflage ribbon footballs used on every play.

1. NFL TERROR

1.1: NFL Terror Drills(2001-Present)The NFL has allowed the U.S. government to conduct numerous terror related drills in their football stadiums throughout America. These terror drills have trained local, state and federal officials for almost every conceivable act of NFL terror including but not limited to active-shooter scenarios, bio-chemical attacks, dirty bomb explosion and suicide terror attacks. In 2001, FEMA officials simulated a terror attack on the Superdome in New Orleans Louisiana, just prior to it hosting the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl terror drill simulated explosions as well as the outbreak of a mysterious bio-terror plague. Coincidentally, the Superdome will also host the 2013 Super Bowl on February 3, 2013.

1.2: NFL Dirty Bomb Terror Plot (2006)On October 20, 2006, it was reported that Jake J. Brahm, an alleged 20-year-old grocery store clerk, had posted threats on the internet of a terrorist attacks on NFL stadiums in which radioactive ''dirty bombs'' would be detonated at seven NFL football stadiums. According to reports, Brahm's posting on October 18, 2006, targeted stadiums in Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Houston, Oakland, Cleveland and New York City. Brahm also added that the stadium explosions would be praised by Osama bin Laden as ''America's Hiroshima'' and spark global conflicts. The message said that bombs would be delivered by trucks and that ''the death toll will approach 100,000 from the initial blasts and countless other fatalities will later occur as result from radioactive fallout.'' Although Brahm was arrested on federal charges that could have resulted in five years behind bars, he only received a 6 month prison sentence.

1.3: NFL Bomb Scare (2006)On November 6, 2006, it was reported that two Carnegie Mellon University students, Sudeep Paul, 21, and Anand Shankar Durvasula, 20, were charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal trespass after they were caught in the middle of the night trying to sneak into Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburg Steelers. Although explosive-sniffing dogs found nothing of interest around the football stadium, an affidavit stated that the dogs registered two separate ''positive hits for explosives'' in the Lexus sport utility vehicle the men were driving. According to reports, Heinz Field security officers spotted the men on a security camera trying to enter the stadium. The security officers then approached the men who tried to escape, only to be apprehended by Pittsburgh police officers in waiting. The suspects initially told police that they were trying to check out the stadium because they had tickets to the Steelers game against the Denver Broncos, but later changed their story and told investigators they were trying to complete a music video. A video camera and tripod were allegedly found inside the vehicle which police found parked nearby. Even though the suspects were questioned by agents from the Joint Terrorism Task Force, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper stated that ''We don't know exactly what their intentions were''.

1.4: NFL Exempt from Terror Lawsuits(2008)Congressional legislation passed in December of 2008, conveniently dismisses any potential lawsuits against the NFL stemming from a future terror attack on any of the NFL's football stadiums. The new law, entitled the SAFETY Act (Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies), which was curiously not reported until September of 2009, essentially guarantees that the NFL will not have to pay any claims that terror victims may file in the aftermath of an attack. According to the report, the ''protection extends only to companies' services or equipment that the Homeland Security Department has approved as being effective in anti-terrorism.'' The NFL got the protection after the government approved the league's nine-page stadium-security guidelines. ''An attack from a terrorist organization could put us out of business'', stated NFL security chief Milt Ahlerich.1.5: NFL & DHS Partnership (2011)The NFL was intimately connected to the foiled Super Bowl XLV nuclear terror plot (see below), so it should come as no surprise that the NFL and DHS have partnered together in the ''If You See Something, Say Something'' terror program. The NFL and DHS terror partnership was forged just two days prior to Super Bowl XLV, when U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stated that: ''We are partnering this year with the NFL on our 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign and launching that NFL partnership right here at the Super Bowl'...The idea is simple'...We are simply asking the American people to be vigilant, recognizing that our security is a shared responsibility that all of us must participate in. If a fan at the Super Bowl or any other American at any other place sees something that is potentially dangerous, then say something about it to local law enforcement or someone in authority''.

1.6: Super Bowl Nuclear Terror Plot (2011)On February 6, 2011, a state-sponsored false-flag terrorist plot to detonate a nuclear bomb at Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Texas, was foiled. Five days before on February 1, 2011, Julian Assange of Wikileaksrevealed to the world via leaked classified diplomatic documents that Al-Qaida was on the brink of using a nuclear bomb and that the West was on the verge of a ''Nuclear 9/11'". What the diplomatic documents failed to mention was actual target, date and location of the upcoming nuclear terror attack. Published 4 days prior on January 28, 2011, a free ebook, entitled The Nuclear Bible that went viral on the internet, specifically named Super Bowl XLV as the target, date and location of the impending nuclear terror attack. Pakistan, the alleged greatest purveyor of terrorism and nuclear proliferation, was scheduled to be scapegoated for the nuclear attack that would kick off a nuclear World War III.

1.7: New NFL Security Protocols (2011-2012)Shortly after the failed Super Bowl terror plot, the NFL drastically changed their security protocols, a clear move to give the NFL plausible deniability in the aftermath of a terror attack. The first phase came in September of 2011, when it was reported that under the new ''enhanced'' pat-down procedures, the NFL had ordered all 32 clubs to search fans from the ankles to the knees as well as the waist up. Previously, security guards only patted down fans from the waist up while looking for booze, weapons or other banned items. The second phase came in August of 2012 when it was reported that even newer security protocols were being implemented at all NFL stadiums. According to the NFL, the new procedures involved ''using handheld metal detectors'' to ''ensure a safe game day environment for all fans''. Football fans are now asked to hold their keys, cell phones and other metal items in their hands during the new security process, a new measure implemented to eliminate the need for ''pat-downs'' before games. It appears that the NFL is fully anticipating a terror attack and has gone through the necessary procedure to ensure that they are not held accountable in the aftermath.

1.8: NFL Attacks & Scares (2011-2012)Sports stadium terror propaganda is all-time high and there have been at least 10 stadium shootings, stabbings, threats and scares in 2012 alone. Ever since the foiled Super Bowl XLV terror plot, there have been numerous incidents which foreshadow that NFL terror is on the horizon. On August 21, 2011, it was reported that two men were shot and a third man was beaten unconscious inside the stadium in the parking lot of Candlestick Park after a preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. Roughly three weeks later on September 13, 2011, a man was arrested after allegedly using an illegal Taser in a fight with other fans during the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets game. About a month later on November 10, 2011, a man was stabbed during a fight in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot during a San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders game. A month later on December 20, 2011, the start of Monday Night Football at Candlestick Park in San Francisco was delayed when a transformer exploded just outside the stadium. The unprecedented explosion delayed the start of the game for about 30 minutes. After being allegedly fixed, the power and lights went out for a second time around 6:45 p.m. causing a second delay of game that lasted 16 minutes in the second quarter. Roughly eight months later, on August 18, 2012, it was reported that a man was police responded to a call from a man who said he had ''accidentally shot'' another man in a parking lot near the University of Phoenix stadium during the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals game. Five days later on August 23, 2012, it was reported that potentially rabid bats had swooped down fans during a game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Detroit Lions and that the Maryland's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) has warned people sitting in section 500 that they could be at risk for rabies. Roughly two weeks later on September 15, 2012, a man shot and wounded a female parking lot employee before killing himself between the stadiums that are home to the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. A month later on October 15, 2012, a man suffered non-fatal injuries when he was stabbed outside Candlestick Park, shortly after the start of Sunday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants. Based on the sheer amount of events involving NFL teams from Oakland and San Francisco, a terror event may transpire in the Bay Area sometime in the near future.1.9: NFL Bomb Threat (2012)On June 2, 2012, it was reported that a Detroit Lions fan, Shawn Payton, 34, had called in two bomb threats during Detroit's playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome in January of 2012. According to reports, Payton called in the hoax threats from his home in Jackson, Michigan, in an attempt to halt the January 7, 2012, game, which the Saints went on to win. According to the indictment, he told the receptionist, ''I will blow up your building.'' In the second message, which was recorded by police after the first threat was reported, he ordered, ''I want you to relay a message to the sideline: If your stupid Southern team keeps winning, there will be '... severe consequences, OK?'' FBI agents allegedly traced phone records to nab Payton, who eventually pleaded guilty to a felony charge of using interstate communications to transmit a threat. Although Payton faced a maximum of five years' imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, it was reported on September 7, 2012, that he was only sentenced to three years probation and two months of home confinement.

2. POTENTIAL NFL TERROR LOCATIONS

2.1: Future NFL Terror Locations? While all NFL teams and stadiums are subject to the state-sponsored terror threat, it appear that Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, Candlestick Park and the Oakland Coliseum in the San Francisco Bay Area, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (New York), Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas, and Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, appear to be the most likely locations. The aforementioned false-flag terror targets where chosen based on team popularity, team owners, city mayors, size and population, as well as the cities' respective terror related history. That being said, Chicago and San Francisco appear to be the chosen locations where NFL terror is most likely.

2.2: Soldier Field (Chicago, Illinois)Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the son of a Zionist terrorist, desperately wants Chicago to host a Super Bowl at Soldier Field and he even joked about taking drastic measures to get what he wants. ''I found out a secret, and that is the commissioner's in-laws live in the Chicago area,'' the mayor said after meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to pitch the idea of a Super Bowl in Chicago. ''And I'm holding him hostage until that happens.'' If the type of Super Bowl Emanuel wants is anything like the Super Bowl XLV, there may be some extracurricular terror activities. The drastic measures Emanuel was refereeing to are more than likely real threats by a Zionist terrorist against the NFL to allow a major terror attack on an upcoming NFL game.

According to the NFL, the Chicago Bears 'Salute to Service' game will be held on November 11, 2011, when the West Point ''Knight Caps'' Glee Club will sing the National Anthem. 100 members of the military from the various branches will hold the American flag and another 100 will hold the 4th Phase Flag. A soldier will lead the Bears onto the field while carrying the American flag, and the team's honorary captains will be Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, and General Raymond E. Johns, Jr., 4-star general from the Air Force. Halftime will feature a Purple Heart presentation, a Medal of Valor presentation and re-enlistment ceremony. There will also be a video produced by Boeing, featuring Bears fans who sent in submissions honoring the military. A World War II veteran will be recognized during the Bears/Boeing Military Salute in the third quarter.

2.3: Candlestick Park/Oakland Coliseum (San Francisco, California)Based on the sheer amount of violent and unprecedented events surrounding the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers, a future terror attack on an NFL stadium in the Bay Area may be imminent. On August 21, 2011, it was reported that two men were shot and a third man was beaten unconscious inside the stadium in the parking lot of Candlestick Park after a preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders. A few months later on November 10, 2011, a man was stabbed during a fight in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot during a San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders game. A month later on October 15, 2012, a man suffered non-fatal injuries when he was stabbed outside Candlestick Park, shortly after the start of Sunday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants.

According to the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers 'Salute to Service' game will be held on November 11, 2011, and will include the ''swearing-in of new Army recruits and honoring of Wounded Warriors pre-game, unfurling of a giant American flag by service personnel, Anthem performed by Navy Counselor 1st Class Steven Powell, flyover of Navy F-18 jets, Salute to Service video board messaging throughout the game, a live tribute to veterans in attendance, a USAA ''Salute to Service'' card stunt during the game and a performance by the Army Silent Drill Team during halftime.''

3. NFL TERROR SCAPEGOAT:AL SHABAAB

3.1: Al Shabaab Terror ThreatThe apparent specialty of Al Shabaab terrorists is attacks on sports related events. Should the NFL suffer a terror attack, it will most likely be scapegoated onto Al Shabaab. Recent Al Shabaab terror propaganda and the ever expanding war on Al Shabaab has been recently bolstered by the timely arrest of at least 4 Al Shabaab terrorists allegedly intent on attacking America. Not surprisingly, connections between Al Qaeda and Al Shabaab have been made from Al Shabaab's inception. The marriage between the two groups is legitimate, given that both groups are run by western intelligence agencies, namely the CIA. Therefore, it would stand to reason that the groups would share the same political and religious ideology. Following in the Al Qaeda footprint, Al Shabaab has allegedly stated to Kenya that ''Your skyscrapers will be destroyed, your tourism will disappear''.

3.2: Al Shabaab & ObamaThe ever growing and fictitious feud between U.S. President Barack Obama and the alleged terror group Al Shabaab is outright laughable. According to reports, Al Shabaab planned to kill Obama at his presidential inauguration and allegedly targeted Obama's grandmother in Kenya. On June 7, 2012, the U.S. government offered a reward for information on the whereabouts of leaders in the Somali militant group Al-Shabab. Two days later on June 9, 2012, Al Shabaab responded to Obama's bounty by offering a counter bounty of 10 camels for President Barack Obama and two camels for information on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

3.3: Al Shabaab Terror AttacksThe apparent specialty of Al Shabaab terror is attacks on sports related events. Should the NFL suffer a terror attack, it will most likely be scapegoated onto Al Shabaab. The growing list of Al Shabaab terror attacks includes attacks on twin bombings on crowds watching the World Cup soccer final, a truck bomb at the education ministry in Somalia, kidnapping aid workers at a camp in Kenya, grenade attacks, a suicide attacks on sports officials in a theater, a suicide attack on the president of Somalia and the foreign minister of Kenya, the attack and capture of an airport in Somalia, a suicide attack on a church as well as a bombing on a church. As evidenced, their attacks are growing bolder and more daring.

3.4: Al Shabaab Threat to AmericaThe U.S. Congress has stated that Al Shabaab poses a ''Direct Threat'' to the U.S. and that there is growing evidence that the Al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia, known as al-Shabaab, is becoming more of a regional terrorist player with the potential to go global as it targets U.S. citizens and interests. Al Shabaab urges their ''brothers and sisters'' to ''do jihad'' in America, Canada, England, ''anywhere in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in China, in Australia, anywhere you find kuffar,'' a derogatory term for non-Muslims.

3.5: Al Shabaab & Suicide TerrorBased on recent suicide terror propaganda, the ever increasing amount of suicide terror attacks and the recent high-profile cases of suicide terror plots allegedly thwarted by officials, suicide terror in America is now imminent. Although to date America has remained suicide terror free, in 1998, an Israeli suicide bomber plotted to attack the U.S. Capitol but was not successful due to faulty wiring. Steel street grates in Philadelphia have been ''mysteriously disappearing'' over the last year, and in Wyoming, numerous horse tails have been clipped and stolen, potentially indicating that suicide bombers dressed as women may be in the false-flag suicide terror script. In the 2012 Hollywood blockbuster entitled ''Act of Valor'', suicide bombers target American sports stadiums, a concept which could transpire in reality at an NCAA or NFL game. According to a May 13, 2012, report, security has been stepped up at airports worldwide as surgically-doctored terrorists plot suicide attacks with implanted bombs that would be undetectable to airport body scanners. On August 14, 2012, it was reported that Al Qaeda, under the heading ''Area of activity: The planet Earth,'' is allegedly seeking jihadists to carry out suicide attacks. Aside from a recent rash of unprecedented suicide terror threats and scares, the U.S. government has also been preparing for suicide terror by conducting multiple suicide terror drills in order to prepare local, state and federal officials for inevitable suicide terror.

3.6: Al Shabaab & PiracyAn obvious question is how would African terrorists get to America undetected? Piracy! They would allegedly hijack ships and sail to America to revenge the death of Osama bin Laden. On October 22, 2012, it was reported that sea piracy had fallen to its lowest level in 4 years and that the Somali piracy threat had eased up. Somali pirates, who have long been linked to Al Shabaab appear to be one in the same and may be on their way to American shores. On October 8, 2012, it was reported that a Greek ship management company says it has lost contact with one of its tankers off the coast of western Africa, where several vessels have been attacked by Somali pirates. A few weeks later on October 25, 2012, it was reported that a mysterious Libyan ship carrying weapons may have some link to the September 11, 2012, terror attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The next day on October 26, 2012, it was reported that the U.S. Navy will be moving 24 ships from the Norfolk Naval Station region in Virginia out to sea to get out of the path of Hurricane Sandy, potentially providing a window for Somali Al Shabaab pirates to land on U.S. shores. Two days later on October 28, 2012, it was reported that a Russian ship with 11 people on board has gone missing in stormy seas off the nation's Pacific Coast, potentially indicating that the Somali pirates have hijacked another vessel.

4. NFL TERROR SCAPEGOAT: EX-GITMO DETAINEES4.1: Ex-Gitmo Detainee Terror Threat Although a solo ex-Gitmo terror attack on the NFL is not likely, it is possible that these alleged terrorist could collude with Al Shabaab or Al Qaeda and serve as the scapegoat for a terror attack on America. After all, just as the 9/11 Terror Trial is about kick-off, reports are beginning to surface that ex-Gitmo detainees are complicit in recent terror attacks giving further credence to the theory that the Guantanamo military base is place where Muslims are radicalized, brainwashed and ultimately sent out into the world to commit acts of terror. On July 19, 2012, it was reported by Bulgarian media that Mehdi Ghezali, an ex-Gitmo jihadist, was responsible for blowing up a bus with Israeli tourists. Two months later on September 20, 2012, it was reported that the September 11, 2012, attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was directly tied to Al Qaeda and a former Guantanamo detainee. Interestingly, on October 27, 2012, just 10 days prior to the 2012 election, Al Qaeda called on Muslims to kidnap Westerners with the purpose of trading victims for Islamic jihadist prisoners held in Guantanamo Bay.

4.2: Ex-Gitmo Detainee ReleasesComplementing the impending 9/11 Terror Trial is the sudden and inexplicable release of at least 57 Guantanamo terror detainees which consist of former al-Qaida cook Ibrahim al-Qosi who supported terrorism by providing logistical support to al-Qaida, Shaker Aamer, the last British resident held at Guantanamo, and Omar Khadr who was convicted of killing Sergeant First Class (SFC) Christopher Speer. Another suspicious development is the upcoming transfer of Guantanamo terror detainees to the Thomson Correctional Center, a state prison 150 miles west of Chicago, Illinois. Whether or not the prison transfer will be completed without incident is yet to be determined, but a surprise prison break would not be out of the question as there have been 4 major prison breaks in Iraq, Libya, Mexico and the United States since September of 2012.

4.3: Gitmo 9/11 TerrorTrialIn November of 2012, the world will be subjected to a spectacular show trial as the 9/11 Terror Trial kicks off in Guantanamo, Cuba. Despite the fact that the Israeli Mossad executed the 9/11 attacks, alleged Islamic terrorists will be tried and likely convicted in a television show trial which should be something of a hybrid between the Nuremberg Trial and the O.J. Simpson trial. Curiously, just prior to the start of the 9/11 Terror Trial, the U.S. Navy will ''clean up offices at the Guantanamo Bay'' to take care of offices which are ''dangerously contaminated with rat droppings and mold''. The Navy is obliging five prisoners charged in the 9/11 attacks who complained that their offices were so contaminated that their lawyers and paralegals have suffered respiratory ailments. Why the complaint wasn't filed by the lawyers is rather suspicious leading to fears that the Navy could conveniently leave behind explosives and/or weapons to aid the ex-Gitmo detainees in a daring prison escape from Guantanamo Bay. Theoretically, Al Shabaab terrorists from Africa could make their way to America via ship, spring their Islamic brothers from Guantanamo Bay, and attack U.S. targets along with ex-Gitmo terror detainees.

CONCULSION

To date, there have been at least three Obama terror plots which have been foiled: The Super Bowl XLV nuclear terror plot, the 2012 New Year's Eve dirty bomb plot, and the 2012 Democratic National Convention terror plot. After being caught red-handed on multiple occasions, the Obama Administration and its Zionist controllers are more desperate than ever to conduct major false-flag operations within the United States. Unbeknownst to most NFL fans, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has some very close ties to George Bush Sr. as well as George W. Bush. In May of 2011, NFL players called the National Football League a ''cartel'', potentially indicating that NFL players are in fact aware of the failed Super Bowl XLV nuclear terror plot. If the NFL suffers a major terror attack, it should come as no surprise as spectacular terrorism demands an audience. The NFL is one of the most highly rated television programs in America and thanks to the NFL's Red Zone, fans will be instantly terrorized if and when terror attacks occur at stadiums throughout the NFL.

The U.S. economy is at an all-time low and dissent for Obama and the U.S. government is at an all-time high. According to a Financial Times article, Obama's has a ''growing credibility crisis'' and there are fears that the Democrats could lose the White House and the Senate to the Republicans. White House advisor Robert Shapiro made it crystal clear that Obama is relying on a terror attack to rescue his presidency: ''The bottom line here is that Americans don't believe in President Obama's leadership,'' said Shapiro, ''He has to find some way between now and November of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can't think of how he could do that. The November election Shapiro spoke of came and went, so its clear that an Obama false-flag attack is imminent.

Jared Lee Loughner sentenced to life in prison for Arizona shootings. (video)

The former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is seen leaving court on Thursday after attending the sentencing of Jared Loughner. Link to this videoThe man who pleaded guilty to shooting the former US representative Gabrielle Giffords, in an attack that left six dead and 12 others injured, has been sentenced to life in prison.

US district judge Larry Burns sentenced Jared Lee Loughner, 24, on Thursday to seven consecutive life terms plus 140 years in prison for the January 2011 shooting.

Loughner pleaded guilty to federal charges under an agreement that guarantees he will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The hearing marked the first time victims including Giffords could confront Loughner in court. Her husband spoke on her behalf, saying Loughner changed his wife's life forever but could not dent her spirit.

Addressing the court Giffords' husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, told Loughner he had failed in his attempt to "extinguish the beauty of life". Giffords suffered a head wound that left her with speech difficulties, a paralysed right arm, diminished sight and a limp.

Kelly used the occasion to take a political swipe at Arizona governor Jan Brewer, a staunch gun-rights advocate, criticising her for speaking out against proposed restrictions on high-capacity ammunition magazines, like the ones Loughner used, in the aftermath of the shooting.

"Jan Brewer said it had nothing to do with the size of the magazine '... She said this just one week after you used a high-capacity magazine," Kelly said, also noting that she named a "state gun" weeks later instead of "fixing the education system".

Loughner, asked at the outset of the hearing by Judge Burns if he had chosen to waive his right to make a statement, answered in a low voice: "That's true."

He was otherwise silent as he sat next to his lawyer, Judy Clarke.

Giffords stood by her husband's side, looking impassively at Loughner as Kelly addressed the defendant directly. "You may have put a bullet through her head, but you haven't put a dent in her commitment to make the world a better place," Kelly told him.

"Although you were mentally ill, you were responsible," he added. "You have decades upon decades to contemplate what you did, but from this moment, Gabby and I are done thinking about you." Giffords did not speak.

Several survivors of the shooting also gave statements in court, including Giffords' former congressional aide Ron Barber, who also was wounded.

Speaking to Loughner's parents, Amy and Randy, who were in court, Barber said: "Please know that I and my family hold no animosity toward you, and that I can appreciate how devastating the acts of your son were."

Loughner pleaded guilty in August in federal court to 19 charges, including murder and attempted murder, in connection with the shootings outside a Tucson area supermarket.

He admitted going to a "Congress on your corner" event armed with a loaded Glock 19 pistol and 60 additional rounds of ammunition with plans to kill Giffords.

Loughner shot her through the head at close range. Six people were killed, including US district judge John Roll and nine-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.

Loughner also admitted shooting the others with the intent to kill.

Court-appointed experts said Loughner suffered from schizophrenia, disordered thinking and delusions. He was determined unfit to stand trial in May 2011 after he disrupted court proceedings and was dragged out of the courtroom.

Loughner later was ruled mentally competent to stand trial after being treated for psychosis at a US bureau of prisons psychiatric hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He then agreed to plead guilty.

Few clues to the motives for the attack have emerged. Prison psychologist Christina Pietz has testified that Loughner had expressed remorse for the rampage and especially for the nine-year-old girl's death.

Giffords resigned from Congress in January to focus on her recovery.

Barber served out the rest of her term after winning a special election. Barber ran in Tuesday's election for a newly created congressional district in Arizona and was running neck-and-neck with Republican Martha McSally, with the outcome hanging on 80,000 provisional and early votes that have yet to be tallied.

A strong earthquake struck northern Burma on Sunday, leaving as many as 12 people feared dead.

An official from the meteorological department in the capital, Naypyitaw, said the magnitude 6.8 quake struck at 7.42am local time. The area surrounding the epicentre is a centre for mining of minerals and gemstones, and several mines were reported to have collapsed.

The biggest single death toll was reported by an administrative officer in Sintku township, who said six people had died there and another 11 were injured. He said some of the dead were miners who were killed when a gold mine collapsed.

According to news reports, several people died when a bridge under construction across the Irrawaddy river east of the town of Shwebo collapsed. The bridge linked Sinku on the east bank of the Irrawaddy with Kyaukmyaung to the west.

The website of Weekly Eleven magazine said four people were killed and 25 injured when the bridge fell. The local government announced a toll of two dead and 16 injured. All of the victims appeared to be workers. A police officer in Shwebo said one person was confirmed dead from the bridge's collapse, and five were unaccounted for.

Weekly Eleven also said two monasteries in Kyaukmyaung collapsed, killing two people.

"This is the worst earthquake I felt in my entire life," said Soe Soe, a 52-year-old Shwebo resident. She said the huge concrete gate of a local monastery collapsed and several sculptures from another pagoda in the town were damaged.

A resident of Naypyitaw, 225 miles south of the quake's epicentre, said several window panes of the parliament building had broken. The quake was felt in Bangkok, the capital of neighbouring Thailand.

It comes a week before a scheduled visit to Burma by Barack Obama. He will be the first US president to visit the one-time pariah nation, which is emerging from decades of military rule.

After Obama win, U.S. backs new U.N. arms treaty talks

Wed, Nov 07 18:48 PM EST

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Hours after U.S. President Barack Obama was re-elected, the United States backed a U.N. committee's call on Wednesday to renew debate over a draft international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global conventional arms trade.

U.N. delegates and gun control activists have complained that talks collapsed in July largely because Obama feared attacks from Republican rival Mitt Romney if his administration was seen as supporting the pact, a charge Washington denies.

The month-long talks at U.N. headquarters broke off after the United States - along with Russia and other major arms producers - said it had problems with the draft treaty and asked for more time.

But the U.N. General Assembly's disarmament committee moved quickly after Obama's win to approve a resolution calling for a new round of talks March 18-28. It passed with 157 votes in favor, none against and 18 abstentions.

U.N. diplomats said the vote had been expected before Tuesday's U.S. presidential election but was delayed due to Superstorm Sandy, which caused a three-day closure of the United Nations last week.

An official at the U.S. mission said Washington's objectives have not changed.

"We seek a treaty that contributes to international security by fighting illicit arms trafficking and proliferation, protects the sovereign right of states to conduct legitimate arms trade, and meets the concerns that we have been articulating throughout," the official said.

"We will not accept any treaty that infringes on the constitutional rights of our citizens to bear arms," he said.

U.S. officials have acknowledged privately that the treaty under discussion would have no effect on domestic gun sales and ownership because it would apply only to exports.

The main reason the arms trade talks are taking place at all is that the United States - the world's biggest arms trader accounting for more than 40 percent of global conventional arms transfers - reversed U.S. policy on the issue after Obama was first elected and decided in 2009 to support a treaty.

'MONTHS AWAY' FROM DEAL?

Countries that abstained included Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sudan, Belarus, Cuba and Iran. China, a major arms producer that has traditionally abstained, voted in favor.

Among the top six arms-exporting nations, Russia cast the only abstention. Britain, France and Germany joined China and the United States in support of the resolution.

The measure now goes to the 193-nation General Assembly for a formal vote. It is expected to pass.

The resolution said countries are "determined to build on the progress made to date towards the adoption of a strong, balanced and effective Arms Trade Treaty."

Jeff Abramson, director of Control Arms, a coalition of advocacy groups, urged states to agree on stringent provisions.

"In Syria, we have seen the death toll rise well over 30,000, with weapons and ammunition pouring in the country for months now," he said. "We need a treaty that will set tough rules to control the arms trade, that will save lives and truly make the world a better place."

Brian Wood of Amnesty International said: "After today's resounding vote, if the larger arms trading countries show real political will in the negotiations, we're only months away from securing a new global deal that has the potential to stop weapons reaching those who seriously abuse human rights."

The treaty would require states to make respecting human rights a criterion for allowing arms exports.

Britain's U.N. mission said on its Twitter feed it hoped that the March negotiations would yield the final text of a treaty. Such a pact would then need to be ratified by the individual signatories before it could enter into force.

The National Rifle Association, the powerful U.S. interest group, strongly opposes the arms treaty and had endorsed Romney.

The United States has denied it sought to delay negotiations for political reasons, saying it had genuine problems with the draft as written.

Obama Trying to Quickly Settle Top NY Homeland Security Cop's Lawsuit to Spare Napolitano Embarassment

By Debbie Schlussel

The biggest winner, other than Obama and the Democrats, in Tuesday's elections was James T. Hayes, the top Homeland Security official in New York. He could stand to make several hundred thousand dollars from the federal government, as the Obama administration seeks to protect Janet Napolitano from more embarrassment over sexual discrimination and harassment allegations against her and her minions.

NY ICE Special Agent in Charge Jim Hayes (top left) Sued Homeland Security Chief Napolitano Over Sexual Harassment by Suzanne Barr (bottom left) and Anti-Straight Discrimination in Favor of J-No Girlfriend Dora Schriro (bottom right)In a story I broke on this site that went viral and got major news coverage all over the world, Hayes, Special Agent in Charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for New York City, filed a civil rights lawsuit against Homeland Security chief Napolitano a/k/a ''The Lesbionic Woman,'' affirming something I've written about on this site for years''harassment by Napolitano's hand-picked ICE then-Chief-of-Staff Suzanne Barr and discrimination by Napolitano in favor of gay employees, including her unqualified lesbian galpal, Dora Schriro. The Obama Justice Department is looking to quickly settle that lawsuit to spare Napolitano, Schriro, Barr, and other Homeland Security officials from having to answer embarrassing questions in depositions.

Now that Eric Holder has announced he may resign as Attorney General, Obama is considering Napolitano for the spot. But it would be very embarrassing for her to undergo confirmation hearings with the lawsuit over her head and so many questions about the ''Magic Mike'' and ''Harem of Rosie O'Donnell'' atmospheres at ICE.

It's probably no accident that the suit was filed just months before the election. Had Mitt Romney won, though, the suit wouldn't have juice anymore, because Napolitano would be on her way out. Now, though, it's on steroids, especially with discussions of Napolitano as the next Attorney General (a huge joke on America, in and of itself), and the Obama administration needs to make the suit go away.

Various filings in federal court gave the parties time to settle the suit before the election, but that time was extended until after the election, probably because the Justice Department was awaiting the election outcome. Now, Obama and Napolitano will have to quickly settle this. And settle this they will, because if they don't, it will be a disaster for Obama and for Napolitano in any other position she seeks in the Obama administration. You heard it here first.

But that doesn't mean that Republican Senators, who should bring this up during any confirmation hearings, can't subpoena witnesses and ask questions about the atmosphere at ICE, in which officials and agents are promoted and/or get special treatment if they are gay, and in which then-Chief-of-Staff Suzy ''Stripper Pole'' Barr propositioned dozens of male ICE agents, and some of them gave in, in exchange for job advancement.

And it doesn't mean that House Homeland Security Committee members can't haul Napolitano's ass before their committee to answer some very serious questions about what went on with her knowing approval and, in many cases, active participation.

Look for this case to be settled very quickly and swept under the rug, now that Barack Hussein Obama is perpetuated on America for another four years.

Napolitano floated for attorney general | WashingtonExaminer.com

The second term game of Obama cabinet musical chairs kicked into high gear Thursday when Attorney General Eric Holder suggested that he might leave soon. He would join Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Tim Geither and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on the exit list.

According to a post-election report from the international law firm SNR Denton, other potential attorney general candidates include Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, and Sens. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

Senate sources said that she would be a good pick for Obama since she has years of experience in the area and is generally well regarded in Congress.

Names immediately surfaced of those who might replace Holder including Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who has steered her department through controversial issues and come out generally unscathed.

Obama answers questions about the CFR and Patriot Act ... In this video, Obama says that he sees no evidence towards a continental government, yet in other videos he has stated ... "world order that I think we'd all like to see." '' YouTube

Dominant Social Theme: All of this conspiracy talk is paranoid and unproductive.

Free-Market Analysis: Thank goodness for the Internet. Even if you are an Obama supporter, this 2008 video should shock you. In it, Obama sidesteps questions about his membership in the elitist Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and professes to be profoundly troubled by then-President George W. Bush's executive orders reducing US constitutional freedoms.

Today, we know that Obama did nothing to defend US civil liberties once he was put in office. Not only did he not reduce George Bush's most invasive executive orders, he added to them. Notably, Obama created a list of US citizens that his administration believes pose an imminent threat to the nation and should be assassinated via drone targeting if possible.

It has been pointed out that killing citizens without due process is profoundly authoritarian and violates every aspect of constitutional rights. Dangerous or not, those who the administration believes are an "imminent threat" still are entitled to due process. For some reason, Obama and those who surround him believe they are not.

What's also troubling, from our point of view, is the reverence with which the audience treats Barack Obama, thanking him for not taking "lobbyist" funds (whatever that means) and applauding enthusiastically as he evades one question after another.

Listen to Obama dodge the real issue '' that he is the globalists' point man in the US, the individual the power elite plans to elevate still higher. There is a reason Obama will not reveal his background; it likely shows quite clearly who he really works for ... and why.

Now that Obama has been elected again, many of the more profoundly authoritarian agendas that he was reluctant to exercise in his first term may be efficiently and unapologetically deployed.

One thing we can certainly expect, however: He won't admit to them.

Nonmetallic Pocket Knife '' A 7'' plastic pocketknife was discovered on a passenger during a pat-down after an anomaly was detected with a body scanner at Salt Lake City (SLC). The passenger stated he was trying to get the knife through security and was arrested on a federal charge. Inert Ordnance and Grenades Etc. '' We continue to find inert hand grenades and other weaponry on weekly basis. Please keep in mind that if an item looks like a realistic bomb, grenade, mine, etc., it is prohibited - real or not. When these items are found at a checkpoint or in checked baggage, they can cause significant delays. I know they are cool novelty items, but it is best not to take them on a plane. Read here and here on why inert items cause problems. Inert explosive training aids were discovered in a golf club case after an alarm in checked baggage at Austin (AUS).Two inert hand grenades were discovered in checked baggage at Norfolk (ORF).Items in the Strangest Places ''It's important to check your bags prior to traveling. If a prohibited item is discovered in your bag, you could be cited and possibly arrested by local law enforcement. Here are a few examples from this week where prohibited items were found in strange places. See a complete list below. Unfortunately these sorts of occurrences are all too frequent which is why we talk about these finds. Sure, it's great to share the things that our officers are finding, but at the same time, each time we find a dangerous item, the throughput is slowed down and a passenger that likely had no ill intent ends up with a citation or in some cases is even arrested. This is a friendly reminder to please leave these items at home. Just because we find a prohibited item on an individual does not mean they had bad intentions, that's for the law enforcement officer to decide. In many cases, people simply forgot they had these items. If you have a travel related issue or question that needs an immediate answer, you can contact us byclicking here.

Microsoft patents spying on you with your TV's camera and fining you if there are too many people watching

Kotaku's Luke Plunkett delves into a newly disclosed Microsoft patent that covers spying on people in their homes using cameras attached to their TVs, in order to levy fines against them for allowing too many people to watch movies at once:

Basically, when you buy or rent something like a movie, you'll only be granted a ''license'' for a certain number of people to watch it. If Kinect detects more people in the room than you had a licence for, it can stop the movie, and even charge you extra. So if Microsoft has its way, you won't just be renting movies any more. You'll have to decide how many people are watching, and no doubt pay more. And if one extra person turns up to your movie night? So help you God, you are going to pay.

Of course, big companies patent all sorts of stupid ideas, many of which never get incorporated into products. But hey, now you know that researchers at Microsoft sit around spitballing ideas like, "Wouldn't it be awesome to spy on our customers in their homes so that we could fine them for having too many people over to watch movies? Wonder if anyone is Hollywood would give us preferential access to movies if we could promise them that they could do nose-counts of people in their own homes?"

This Kinect Patent Is Terrifying, Wants To Charge You For License Violation

Designations of Iranian Individuals and Entities for Censorship Activities Under the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act and Executive Order 13628

Link to Article

Sun, 11 Nov 2012 05:58

Today, the U.S. Department of State reported to the Congress the designations of four Iranian individuals and five Iranian entities for having engaged in censorship or other activities that prohibit, limit, or penalize freedom of expression or assembly by citizens of Iran, or that limit access to print or broadcast media, including by jamming international satellite broadcasts into Iran, and related activities. These actions were taken pursuant to Section 403 of the Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012, signed by the President on August 10, 2012, and Executive Order 13628, which the President signed into effect on October 9, 2012. As a result of this action, U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions involving the designated individuals or entities, and all designated individuals and members of designated entities are subject to a ban on travel to the United States. This action also blocks, or freezes, the property and interests in property of designated individuals or entities.

These actions underscore the Administration's ongoing commitment to hold Iranian government officials and entities responsible for the abuses carried out against their own citizens. Those designated today include Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Reza Taghipour, who has been found responsible for ordering the jamming of satellite television broadcasts and restricting internet connectivity. Also sanctioned are Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and its Press Supervisory Board, which have limited freedom of expression through their censorship and closure of numerous newspapers and detention of journalists. In addition, we are designating key individuals and entities responsible for assisting the regime in its crackdown on and censorship of the Iranian people.

Such abuses demonstrate the Iranian Government's ongoing campaign to censor its own citizens, curtail their freedoms, and to prevent the free flow of information both in to and out of Iran. Countless activists, journalists, lawyers, students, and artists have been detained, censured, tortured, or forcibly prevented from exercising their human rights. With the measures we are taking today, we draw the world's attention to the scope of the regime's insidious actions, which oppress its own people and violate Iran's own laws and international obligations. We will continue to stand with the Iranian people in their quest to protect their dignity and freedoms and prevent the Iranian Government from creating an ''electronic curtain'' to cut Iranian citizens off from the rest of the world.

"The Worm Turns" As Chevron 'Infected' By Stuxnet Collateral Damage | ZeroHedge

Link to Article

Sun, 11 Nov 2012 01:28

"I don't think the US government even realized how far it had spread" is how the collateral damage from the Iran-attacking Stuxnet computer virus is described by Chevron. The sleep San-Ramon-based oil giant admitted this week that from 2010 on "we're finding it in our systems and so are other companies... so now we have to deal with it." It would seem that little consideration for just how viral this cyber warfare tactic has become and this news (reported by Russia Today) is the first time a US company has come clean about the accidental infection. Discovered in 2010, the Stuxnet worm was reported with all but certainty to be the creation of the United States, perhaps with the assistance of Israel, to set back Iran's nuclear enrichment program as a preemptive measure against an eventual war. In a June 2012 article published by The New York Times, government agents with direct knowledge of Stuxnet claimed that first President George W. Bush, then Barack Obama, oversaw the deployment of the worm as part of a well-crafted cyberassault on Iran. On the record, the federal government maintains ignorance on the subject of Stuxnet, but perhaps Chevron sums up the impact of Stuxnet best (given the escalating Iranian enrichment program): "I think the downside of what they did is going to be far worse than what they actually accomplished."

America's cyberwar is already seeing collateral damage, and it's hitting the country's own billion-dollar companies. Oil giants Chevron say the Stuxnet computer virus made by the US to target Iran infected their systems as well.

California-based Chevron, a Fortune 500 company that's among the biggest corporations in the world, admits this week that they discovered the Stuxnet worm on their systems back in 2010. Up until now, Chevron managed to make their finding a well-kept secret, and their disclosure published by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday marks the first time a US company has come clean about being infected by the virus intended for Iran's nuclear enrichment program. Mark Koelmel of the company's earth sciences department says that they are likely to not be the last, though.

''We're finding it in our systems and so are other companies,'' says Koelmel. ''So now we have to deal with this.''

Koelmel claims that the virus did not have any adverse effects on his company, which generated a quarter of a trillion dollars in revenue during 2011. As soon as Chevron identified the infection, it was taken care of immediately, he says. Other accidental targets might not be so lucky though, and the computer worm's complex coding means it might be a while before anyone else becomes aware of the damage.

''I don't think the US government even realized how far it had spread,'' Koelmel adds.

Discovered in 2010, the Stuxnet worm was reported with all but certainty to be the creation of the United States, perhaps with the assistance of Israel, to set back Iran's nuclear enrichment program as a preemptive measure against an eventual war. Only as recently as this June, however, American officials with direct knowledge of the worm went public with Uncle Sam's involvement.

In a June 2012 article published by The New York Times, government agents with direct knowledge of Stuxnet claimed that first President George W. Bush, then Barack Obama, oversaw the deployment of the worm as part of a well-crafted cyberassault on Iran. Coupled with another malicious program named Flame and perhaps many more, Stuxnet was waged against Iran as part of an initiative given the codename ''Olympic Games.'' Rather than solely stealing intelligence through use of computer coding, the endeavor was believed to be the first cyberattack that intended to cause actual hard damage.

''Previous cyberattacks had effects limited to other computers,'' Michael Hayden, the former chief of the CIA, explained to the Times earlier this year. ''This is the first attack of a major nature in which a cyberattack was used to effect physical destruction.''

On the record, the federal government maintains ignorance on the subject of Stuxnet. With American companies perhaps soon coming out of the woodwork to discuss how they were hit, though, the White House may have to finally admit that they've had direct involvement.

After the Times published their expose in June, Senator Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of Intelligence Committee, called for an investigation to track down how the media was first made aware of America's involvement in Olympic Games.

"I am deeply disturbed by the continuing leaks of classified information to the media, most recently regarding alleged cyber efforts targeting Iran's nuclear program,'' Feinstein said through a statement at the time. ''I made it clear that disclosures of this type endanger American lives and undermine America's national security."

When Feinstein spoke to DC's The Hill newspaper, she said, "the leak about the attack on Iran's nuclear program could 'to some extent' provide justification for copycat attacks against the United States." According to the chairwoman, "This is like an avalanche. It is very detrimental and, candidly, I found it very concerning. There's no question that this kind of thing hurts our country."

Just last month, a shadowy Iranian-based hacking group called The Qassam Cyber Fighters took credit for launching a cyberattack on the servers of Capital One Financial Corp. and BB&T Corp., two of the biggest names in the American banking industry. Days earlier, Google informed some of its American users that they may be targeted in a state-sponsored cyberattack from abroad, and computer experts insist that these assaults will only intensify over time.

''We absolutely have seen more activity from the Middle East, and in particular Iran has been increasingly active as they build up their cyber capabilities,'' CrowdStrike Security President George Kurtz told the Times.

Speaking of the accidental impact Stuxnet could soon have in the US, Chevron's Koelmel tells the Journal, "I think the downside of what they did is going to be far worse than what they actually accomplished.''

Waging War and Peace With Women - NYTimes.com

Sun, 11 Nov 2012 01:20

PARIS '-- When NATO unveils its new doctrine later this month, it will include a revamped nuclear policy, a section on cyberwar and fresh thinking on how to engage Russia.

But will it follow a little-noticed recommendation (from an expert group led by Madeleine Albright, a former U.S. secretary of state) to give women greater say in matters of war and peace?

Women, say a growing number of security experts, may well be as important to 21st-century security as new nuance on a European missile shield.

''Because women are often a principal victim of conflict, the women's perspective can be vital in seeking to prevent or to mitigate the damage caused by conflict. That assertion should not be controversial; it is simply common sense,'' Ms. Albright said in an e-mail.

Women are half the talent pool '-- more than half when it comes to university degrees in security-related fields '-- and overstretched Western allies need troops on the ground and sharp minds at the negotiating table.

But women also bring diversity to the male-dominated world of military and security affairs at a time when peacekeeping has morphed into nation-building and war has become about hearts and minds as well as territory.

Female soldiers can respectfully search Muslim women at checkpoints. They are more likely to win the trust of local populations abused '-- often sexually '-- by men with guns. And their presence is credited by some, though not all, experts with having a civilizing effect on their own units.

''Female soldiers have the unique advantage of being seen as a third gender,'' said Paula Broadwell, a reserve officer who has visited special female units in Afghanistan on several occasions and is now doing academic research. ''They command the same respect men do but are also granted the access reserved for women.''

Ten years after the U.N. Security Council passed Resolution 1325, formally calling on governments to get more women involved in waging war and peace, there has been some progress. Female ''blue helmettes'' patrol in Liberia. Female marines, trained in Pashto language and customs, are trying to engage Afghan women. NATO ''gender advisers'' accompany allied troops in Afghanistan. The European Union foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, has floated plans for female quotas in the bloc's nascent diplomatic service.

Across the Atlantic, women now run the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. mission to the United Nations and the State Department. Thanks to what The Washington Post called the ''Hillary effect,'' a record 25 female ambassadors have been posted to Washington as countries from Oman to India bank on a special female bond with the superpower's top diplomat. Under Hillary Rodham Clinton, most senior nuclear arms experts dealing with proliferation and disarmament issues are women.

At the Pentagon, there is now one female four-star general, Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody of the army. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, who for much of her career was used to being the only woman at the table, recounted at a conference at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin last month how she walked into a Pentagon meeting where there wasn't a single man. ''I was stunned. There were only women in the room '-- including the military officer,'' she recalled.

Few now openly voice doubts about giving women greater say on security matters.

''I firmly believe that women can play a very important role in the prevention of conflicts and in peace building,'' the NATO secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said last week in an interview with The New York Times, insisting that the alliance was implementing Resolution 1325, though refusing to say whether it was worthy of being included in the new doctrine.

However, on Mr. Rasmussen's watch, the share of women on NATO's civilian staff has stalled at 29 percent. Only 3 of the 19 most senior posts are held by women, and only one of them holds the title of (acting) assistant secretary general '-- Stefanie Babst, who in Berlin lamented the alliance's male ''monoculture.''

Women account for about 15 percent of U.S. military personnel, 14 percent of the French military, just under 10 percent of the British armed forces and 9 percent of the German Army. Female units in U.N. peacekeeping missions have doubled to 6 percent over the past five years but remain far behind the international target of 20 percent.

More important, women remain scarce among decision makers and opinion leaders in the security field: Even in the United States, where three of the last four secretaries of state have been women, there has never been a female secretary of defense or joint chief of staff, nor a woman director of the C.I.A. With only 19 female admirals and 2 female generals in the Marines, 28 in the air force and 20 in the army, ''we have very few women who could even be in the pipeline to become joint chief of staff,'' said Judith Hicks-Stiehm, currently a visiting professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. She added that women wrote only 3 of 48 articles in the last two issues of Foreign Affairs, the must-read journal for anyone involved in international security affairs.

At the annual strategic review of the International Institute for Security Studies in Geneva in September, prime hobnobbing territory for retired intelligence folk and defense experts, only 2 of 21 plenary speakers were female.

''At least these days women get to ask a few questions,'' said Catherine M. Kelleher, a veteran nuclear expert and one of half a dozen women who got to chatting on Day 2 of the conference, exasperated by the lack of female participants. Ms. Kelleher recalled a security conference in Germany some years ago where she was asked to use the hotel pool between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. because the men wanted to swim naked.

Some, like Ms. Hicks at the Pentagon, argue that combat-exclusion rules barring women from the kind of battlefield experience traditionally needed to rise up the military ranks are an important factor limiting women.

Ms. Broadwell says facts are forcing change: Asymmetric warfare involving roadside bombs has blurred the lines of engagement by making women in traditional noncombat roles more vulnerable to attack. A new memorial at the war cemetery at Arlington, Virginia, honors 140 female troops who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The memorial brings home another barrier for women.

''What our current two wars have highlighted is that there are parents fighting those wars,'' said Ms. Broadwell, who joined the reserves after she had two children. ''One priority is we need to figure out how to combine military careers with family.''

Enough of a strategic priority for NATO to include in its new doctrine?

Last week, Mr. Rasmussen declined to answer.

President Bashar Al Assad: Exclusive Interview. 'I'm not a Western puppet '' I have to live an

In an exclusive interview with RT, Syrian President Bashar Assad said he will not leave Syria. Assad also spoke on the calls for armed foreign intervention in Syria, and the possible fallout on the country's internal conflict and across the region.

''We are the last stronghold of secularism and stability in the region and coexistence, let's say, it will have a domino effect that will affect the world from the Atlantic to the Pacific and you know the implication on the rest of the world,'' Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad told RT in an exclusive interview that will air on Friday, November 9.

''I am not a puppet. I was not made by the West to go to the West or to any other country,'' he said. ''I am Syrian, I was made in Syria, I have to live in Syria and die in Syria,'' Assad said during the interview.

Syria has been wracked by internal violence for the past 20 months. With the government and opposition failing to reach an agreement on a ceasefire, foreign nations are pressuring the Syrian president to step down, with some even calling for armed intervention in the war-torn country.

''I do not think the West is going [to intervene], but if they do so, nobody can tell what is next,'' Assad said. ''I think the price of this [foreign] invasion if it happened is going to be more than the whole world can afford.''

According to a Turkish official, Ankara has officially requested that NATO deploy Patriot missiles along the border with Syria, over fears that armed conflict could spill across the border.

The armed conflict in Syria has turned increasingly violent in recent months. Rebel forces have received significant financial, diplomatic and organizational support from countries like the US and Western-allied nations such as Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

However, the opposition has yet to overcome infighting and form a united government. The rebels' Western allies have also become concerned by signs that radical Islamists are gaining strength and influence within the opposition.

You can watch the Syrian president's interview in full on Friday on RT.

Putin Fires Armed Forces Chief, Names New Defense Minister

Link to Article

Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:51

Just three days after Russia's President Vladimir Putin fired his defense minister over a corruption scandal, the premier has now dismissed the chief of the nation's armed forces.

General Nikolai Makarov will now be replaced by General Valery Gerasimov '' who gained prominence for leading Russian forces during the Chechnya conflict in 1998-2003 '' as the new armed forces chief of general staff.

On Tuesday Putin jettisoned his defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov and gave his job to key ally Sergei Shoigu.

Serdyukov allegedly sold ministry assets to commercial firms at below-market prices, costing the government a cool 3 billion roubles ($95 million). These questionable transactions are now being investigated by Russian authorities.

Several employees of Oboronservice, that state-controlled military contractor made sold the assets, have been arrested. Serdyukov is believed to be linked with the company.

Shoigu praised Serdyukov's successor Gerasimov as having ''colossal experience, both on the general staff and directly in the field and of course he has battle experience," according to the Kremlin's website, BBC reported.

Makarov and Serdyukov, the outgoing duo, were less-than-popular among the military for reforms they were trying to push through. Serduykov had been tasked with modernizing the army, Russia Today reported, but the way he chose to go about the task, including the planned shedding of jobs, elicited mixed reactions.

The appointment of several women to top defense ministry positions had also sparked a furor, with opponents claiming the women had little or no military experience, RT said.

On top of the "women battalion" scandal, Serdyukov spent over $700 billion on foreign-made weapons, on a budget that was supposed to be spent on contractors in the motherland.

Gerasimov, the incoming Chief of Staff, has been a vocal critic of Serdyukov's reforms, RT reported, but he and Shoigu are still tasked with transforming the Russian army into a more modern fighting machine.

As The Moscow Times put it, Shogiu has inherited "a military at a crossroads, torn between tradition and the half-completed reforms of his disgraced predecessor."

Nicholas de Larrinaga, Europe editor at Jane's Defence Weekly, told the Moscow Times: "Shoigu comes with a reputation as a strong administrator, but his position on reform is less clear. Immediately, however, it is likely that Shoigu will continue where Serdyukov left off on reform as Putin has considerable political capital invested in improving the state of the military."

A former resident of a North Wales care home has apologised for wrongly claiming that the Conservative peer, Lord McAlpine, had sexually abused him.

Steve Messham, a victim of sexual abuse in care homes in North Wales in the 1970s, issued a statement on Friday evening in which he said that his claim was based on a case of mistaken identity

"After seeing a picture in the past hour of the individual concerned, this [is] not the person I identified by photograph presented to me by the police in the early 1990s, who told me the man in the photograph was Lord McAlpine," he said.

"I want to offer my sincere and humble apologies to him and his family."

Messham was interviewed for an item on BBC Newsnight which was broadcast on Friday last week. Although it did not interview McAlpine, it was introduced with the words: "this man says a leading Conservative from the time was one of his abusers".

The name of the Tory peer and former party treasurer, who now lives in Italy, swiftly began circulating on the internet.

McAlpine finally broke his silence this morning to say that reports linking him to North Wales child abuse are "wholly false and seriously defamatory" '' and to also say that he had only been to Wrexham on one occasion.

BBC sources have said that executives and journalists involved with the BBC2 programme, fronted by Jeremy Paxman and Kirsty Wark, concluded that there was no need to contact the peer before broadcasting the anonymised accusations because Newsnight had no intention of naming him.

Had Newsnight done so, they might have heard Lord McAlpine's denials. Another journalist, Michael Crick, from Channel 4 News, spoke to the peer twice on 2 November '' and was told that McAlpine had only once been to Wrexham, the town where the abuse was alleged to have taken place.

Meanwhile Conservative MP Rob Wilson has written to the chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten, asking him to explain what steps it had taken to establish the true identity of the man who abused Mr Messham.

"What steps did the BBC take to verify the accuracy of Mr Messham's allegations against the man variously described as a 'leading Conservative from the time', 'leading Conservative politician from the Thatcher years', 'senior public figure', 'prominent Tory politician', or 'senior Tory politician', and to check concerns about mistaken identity?" he wrote.

He also wrote to the regulator, Ofcom, asking whether it believed there were grounds for investigating whether the BBC had given the man concerned an "appropriate and timely opportunity to respond" before the allegations were broadcast by Newsnight.

"If the BBC did not do this, would Ofcom consider this a breach of section 7 of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code?" he wrote.

George Entwistle and BBC Chairman Lord Patten give their statements outside Broadcasting House

The BBC's director general, George Entwistle, has resigned in the wake of the Newsnight child abuse broadcast.

In a statement outside New Broadcasting House in London, Mr Entwistle said: "I have decided that the honourable thing to do is to step down."

Earlier, Mr Entwistle said Newsnight's report, which led to Thatcher-era Tory Lord McAlpine being wrongly implicated, should not have been aired.

The broadcast covered cases of child abuse at north Wales care homes.

BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten, who appeared alongside Mr Entwistle when he delivered his statement, will appear on the BBC's Andrew Marr programme on Sunday morning.

Mr Entwistle took up the post of director general on 17 September, and his sudden resignation makes him the shortest-ever serving BBC director general.

In his statement, he said: "In the light of the fact that the director general is also the editor in chief and ultimately responsible for all content, and in the light of the unacceptable journalistic standards of the Newsnight film broadcast on Friday 2 November, I have decided that the honourable thing to do is to step down from the post of director general."

'Great honour'He said that when he was appointed to the role, he was confident BBC trustees had chosen the best candidate for the post and the "right person to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead".

"However the wholly exceptional events of the past few weeks have led me to conclude that the BBC should appoint a new leader," he said.

Continue reading the main storyGeorge Entwistle said he was stepping down because as director general of the BBC he was also its editor in chief.

He said it was the honourable thing to do after a BBC Newsnight film alleged child abuse by an unnamed Conservative politician - which was proved to be unfounded.

Coming on top of the Jimmy Savile crisis, which was prompted partly by the fact that Newsnight had shelved an earlier investigation into allegations of child abuse, this was particularly damaging to the BBC.

But this was also about the handling of the crisis. Last month, Mr Entwistle was accused by MPs of showing "an extraordinary lack of curiosity" over the Jimmy Savile affair and they told him to "get a grip".

On Saturday in an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said he knew nothing in advance about the Newsnight broadcast nor had he seen a newspaper report revealing Lord McAlpine may have been wrongly accused.

MPs, former editors and broadcasting executives were unimpressed and so, I understand, were members of the BBC Trust.

On Sunday, the job of acting director-general will be taken by Tim Davie, who's been running the radio side of the BBC but who has no direct journalistic experience.

The BBC still faces very serious questions, not just about its journalism but about how the organisation is run.

This crisis - one of the most serious in the BBC's history - is not yet over.

"To have been the director general of the BBC even for a short period, and in the most challenging of circumstances, has been a great honour.

"While there is understandable public concern over a number of issues well covered in the media - which I'm confident will be addressed by the review process - we must not lose sight of the fact that the BBC is full of people of the greatest talent and the highest integrity.

"That's what will continue to make it the finest broadcaster in the world."

Later, speaking outside his home following his resignation, Mr Entwistle said he was going to "spend some time with my family".

During his 54 days in charge, Mr Entwistle has also had to deal with controversy over the BBC shelving a Newsnight investigation into former BBC presenter and DJ Jimmy Savile, who police say could have abused as many as 300 people over a 40-year-period.

As a result, former Sky News head Nick Pollard is examining whether there were BBC management failings following the Newsnight programme not being broadcast, Also, an inquiry has begun into the culture and practices at the BBC in the era of alleged sexual abuse by Savile. Another review is to examine sexual harassment policies at the BBC.

Mr Entwistle's resignation came after he was criticised for his performance during an interview on the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme on Saturday, in which he admitted he had not read a newspaper article revealing the case of mistaken identity involving Lord McAlpine, and that he had not seen the Newsnight broadcast when it aired on 2 November as he "was out".

Lord Patten, who made a statement following Mr Entwistle's resignation, said: "This is undoubtedly one of the saddest evenings of my public life."

He said: "At the heart of the BBC is its role as a trusted global news organisation.

"As the editor in chief of that news organisation George has very honourably offered us his resignation because of the unacceptable mistakes - the unacceptable shoddy journalism - which has caused us so much controversy.

"He has behaved as editor with huge honour and courage and would that the rest of the world always behaved the same."

Acting DGCulture Secretary Maria Miller said: "It is a regrettable, but right decision. It is vital that credibility and public trust in this important national institution is restored.

"It is now crucial that the BBC puts the systems in place to ensure it can make first class news and current affairs programmes."

But Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, who sits on the culture select committee, said Mr Entwistle's departure was a "terrible mistake" and that he had been "hung out to dry".

Continue reading the main storyThe corporation finds itself wounded, under attack and, in effect, leaderless''

End QuoteHe described Mr Entwistle as "an honourable, highly talented, very very good man who is trying to do the right thing".

"George Entwistle has been badly let down by BBC News managers and the people around him. He was trying to get to grips with that. The BBC should have given him time."

Conservative MP Philip Davies, who also sits on the culture select committee, said Lord Patten should resign. "He is responsible for the public's trust in the BBC," Mr Davies told the BBC. "That trust is at an all time low."

BBC reporter Ben Geoghegan says the decision has divided opinion. The likes of Mr Bradshaw and former BBC chairman Sir Christopher Bland say that Mr Entwistle has been wrongly sacrificed. However, many other people - the majority - believe it is probably the right decision because of the depth of the crisis, our reporter said.

Tim Davie, director of BBC Audio and Music, will take over as acting director general immediately.

BBC home editor Mark Easton said the BBC was at a "real crossroads, because its whole future depends on convincing the public in the United Kingdom that this is an organisation in which they have confidence, and in which they have trust, and that they believe in the integrity of our news coverage".

The organisation is, in some ways, in a very dangerous position, he added.

Newsnight reported on 2 November an abuse victim's claims against a leading 1980s Tory politician.

Labour MP Ben Bradshaw: "Who else is going to clear up this mess? I'm very worried"

The former senior Tory has said the claims are "wholly false and seriously defamatory".

One abuse victim, Steve Messham, has apologised to Lord McAlpine, Tory treasurer during Margaret Thatcher's leadership, after saying he did not assault him.

Mr Messham said in the 1990s he was shown a photograph by police of his alleged abuser but was incorrectly told it was Lord McAlpine.

The BBC has ordered an "immediate pause" in Newsnight investigations to assess editorial robustness and a suspension of all co-productions with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which worked on the Newsnight broadcast.

Before his departure, Mr Entwistle had commissioned a report from BBC Scotland director Ken MacQuarrie into what happened with the Newsnight investigation.

And the BBC also ordered a senior news executive to "supervise" Friday night's edition of Newsnight, during which an apology was broadcast.

George Entwistle's resignation last night came amid claims that he simply lacked the 'grip' to oversee the BBC.

Mr Entwistle quit after admitting yesterday he had not even been aware that BBC2's Newsnight was about to link a senior Tory to child sex abuse ring.

Appointed in the summer, his short reign overseeing the Corporation's vast empire lasted less than two months '' he only moved into the director-general's office on September 17.

Last night, media commentator Steve Hewlett said Mr Entwistle '' previously director of the BBC division with responsibility for all the Corporation's television channels '' had not appeared to be 'in control' of what was going on around him.

Scroll down for videoI quit: George Entwistle, left, makes his resignation statement last night with BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten

Mr Hewlett said: 'The critical thing that's done for him is the sense that he's just not got a grip.'

Mr Entwistle had already been dubbed 'incurious George' after his failure to ask what Newsnight's now famously cancelled investigation into Jimmy Savile was all about.

And the crisis deepened last night as it was claimed that the former director-general personally intervened to axe a Panorama investigation into two newspaper tycoons, which was due to be aired tomorrow.

According to well-placed BBC sources, Mr Entwistle ordered the programme on Daily Telegraph owners Sir Frederick and Sir David Barclay to be pulled as he believed it was 'risky' '' but did not fully explain what he meant.

It will be replaced by a documentary about badgers.

Mr Entwistle's departure comes in the wake of more revelations about Newsnight's false claims about the North Wales paedophile ring:

A senior journalist working with the programme sparked furious internet speculation about the senior Tory said to be implicated into the scandal by posting a tweet while under the influence of 'potent medication'.The BBC was warned hours before broadcast that it hadn't put the allegations to the political figure, now known to be Lord McAlpine, and that he would sue if anyone linked him to the abuseMr Entwistle said he missed all the warning signs, and the programme itself 'because he was out'.The former director-general yesterday told Radio 4's Today programme that, despite being editor-in-chief of the BBC with final responsibility for broadcasts, he does not 'sign off' every programme.

IN THE FIRING LINE?

Head of news: Helen Boaden

Newsnight editor: Peter Rippon

Radio 5 Live controller: Adrian van Klaveren

However, with the Corporation being engulfed by scandal after scandal, he apparently took the decision to veto tomorrow's investigation into the notoriously reclusive Barclay brothers.

The BBC has refused to reveal the contents of that film, but it involved a six-month investigation led by the veteran reporter John Sweeney.

Mr Entwistle's intervention had left Panorama staff behind the investigation feeling 'bleak,' said one source close to the programme.

A source in the BBC said: 'There was no personal communication between him [Entwistle] and the Panorama team. But he told his lieutenants, who told us that the programme is not strong enough and the risk is too high.

'That's his judgment. Others, in fact everybody, disagree with him.'

The makers of Panorama are now understood to be in a fierce internal argument with BBC executives in the hope of broadcasting the programme at a later date.

A BBC spokesman declined to comment on any decisions regarding Panorama, but tomorrow's episode will now be about the Government's aborted plan to cull badgers.

Investigation axed: Instead of showing a programme about the Barclay brothers, a show about the Government's aborted plan to cull badgers will be aired

It is likely to prove less contentious than the Newsnight film implicating Lord McAlpine that plunged the BBC into its latest crisis '' a crisis that stated with an ill-considered tweet from the editor of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism Iain Overton who had been working with Newsnight on the report into child abuse in North Wales.

At 11am on the day of the show, November 2, he posted an explosive tweet saying: 'If all goes well we've got a Newsnight out tonight about a very senior political figure who is a paedophile.'

The message prompted an immediate frenzy, and led to the BBC being bombarded with calls from journalists seeking clarification.

In particular his words were seized upon by Newsnight's former political editor Michael Crick, who told Overton that the politician concerned had not been contacted about the allegations.

Last night a source said Overton has been taking 'potent medication' for a recently diagnosed serious illness and that this, in part, had led him to tweet 'unwisely'.

The source added that his Twitter post was something he 'deeply regretted'. But although he later erased the tweet, the damage was already done.

That evening Crick appeared on Channel 4 News to warn that the 'senior Tory' was planning to sue anyone who linked him to paedophilia. As we now know the politician in question was Lord McAlpine, but at the time Crick was unable to name him for legal reasons.

LEVESON LINK TO FREELANCE TEAM USED BY NEWSNIGHTThe calamitous Newsnight report was conducted by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which '' ironically in the circumstances '' was set up to counter the perceived decline in investigative reporting by the mainstream media.

The not-for-profit body is funded and supported by a network of media and City grandees with links both to the Hacked Off campaign against press intrusion and the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics.

Its trustees include Sir David Bell, who was the chairman of the Media Standards Trust when it spawned the Hacked Off campaign to help 'victims of press abuse'. Three weeks after launching the campaign Sir David stepped aside to sit on the Leveson Inquiry.

The McAlpine investigation was carried out by the bureau's lead reporter, Angus Stickler, an ex-Newsnight reporter who also worked on the Today programme.

The bureau's editor, Iain Overton, has a distinguished track record as a commissioning executive at ITN and a senior producer at the BBC.

But it was his Twitter message 12 hours before the Newsnight broadcast, which talked of 'a very senior political figure who is a paedophile', that prompted a torrent of speculation on the internet and precipitated the current crisis for the BBC.

But while half the nation had been drawn into the intrigue, Mr Entwistle was apparently oblivious.

He missed the Twitter meltdown, the warning from Crick and, indeed, the Newsnight programme itself. 'I was out,' he told Radio 4's Today programme.

Despite his illness, Overton spoke at the Oxford Union the night before the Newsnight programme was broadcast. Afterwards he boasted that the following evening's programme was going to expose a top Tory as a paedophile. Crick, who was also present, is said to have asked: 'Do you mean McAlpine?' Overton replied: 'Well, you said it.'

Over at the Newsnight offices there was 'intense concern' over the planned programme and the decision to make a dramatic claim on the basis of a single source.

There was anger too that, in the words of one highly-placed insider, the BBC 'hierarchy appeared to be asleep at the wheel'.

Despite McAlpine's repeated denials to Crick in the hours leading up to Newsnight's broadcast, nobody from the BBC ever contacted the former Tory treasurer for a comment.

A BBC News source has told The Mail on Sunday that on that day there was 'a lot of shouting in the office' between deputy editor Liz Gibbons, currently in charge of the programme, and two other journalists over whether to run the story.

It appears Adrian van Klaveren, the controller of Radio 5 Live who was last month drafted in to bolster the BBC's news management structure, signed it off.

Last night Overton appeared to be considering his position. Having tweeted that the trustees of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism were 'appalled at what appears to be a breach of its standards', he added: 'I will make a statement once I have met the Trust.'

Humphrys to his boss: 'You should go, shouldn't you?'Outgoing BBC director-general George Entwistle was yesterday involved in an extraordinary exchange with veteran presenter John Humphrys on BBC's flagship Radio 4 Today news programme.

During a tense, 15-minute interview, Mr Entwistle defended his apparent lack of awareness of the Newsnight programme in which Lord McAlpine was wrongly accused of being involved in a child abuse scandal. Here are excerpts from the transcript:

JH: But you must have known what happened because a tweet was put out 24 hours beforehand telling the world that something was going to happen on Newsnight that night that would reveal extraordinary things about child abuse and that would involve a senior Tory figure from the Thatcher years. You didn't see that tweet?GE: I didn't see that tweet, John, I now understand...JH: Why not?GE: Well I, uh, I check Twitter sometimes at the end of the day or I don't check it at all.JH: You have an enormous staff of people who are reporting in to you on all sorts of things '' they didn't see this tweet that was going to set the world on fire?GE: Now John, this tweet, I'm afraid, was not brought to my attention, so I found out about this film after it had gone out...JH: Nobody said to you at any time or to anybody on your staff who would then report to you, ''Look, we've got this Newsnight film going out '' Newsnight should already light a few bulbs with you surely but '' we've got this film going out that is going to make massively serious allegations about a former senior political...'' Nobody even mentioned it?GE: No.JH: Isn't that extraordinary?GE: Well, um, in the light of what happened here, I wish this had been referred to me, but it wasn't and I have to... I run the BBC on the basis that the right people are put in the right positions to make the right decisions. Now, in this case the film was not signed off in Newsnight, legal advice was involved, it was referred to the right places in news management and further referral upwards was made...JH: So, when did you find out?GE: I found out about the film the following day.JH: The following day? You didn't see it that night when it was broadcast?GE: No, I was out...JH: But you have seen the film now I take it?GE: Yes, I have seen the film now...JH: When did you learn that there were doubts about [Mr Messham's] testimony?GE: I only found out yesterday when I saw him make his apology to Lord McAlpine that there must be doubts about his testimony.JH: And you didn't ask any questions during the course of the week? Because questions began to be raised very early on in the week as you know.GE: No, John, I didn't.JH: Do you not think that you should have?GE: I um... I... there are... the number of things that there are going on in the BBC mean that when something is referred to me and brought to my attention I engage with it...JH: We now know Newsnight has failed massively on one programme and it has failed massively on another programme and it's caused the BBC enormous damage. You, as you say, as Editor-in-Chief, are ultimately responsible. Therefore it leads to the obvious question: You should go, shouldn't you?GE: No John, I've been appointed the director-general, the director-general isn't appointed only if things are going to go well, the director-general is appointed to deal with things which go well and things which go badly...JH: Have you given any thought to shutting down Newsnight?GE: No, I haven't John...

Unwanted donations can be 'disaster after the disaster'

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J.

Superstorm Sandy has brought out generosity far and wide in the biggest U.S. relief effort for the American Red Cross and other groups since Hurricane Katrina swamped the Gulf Coast in 2005.

Some of that response, though, is helping create a ''second disaster after the disaster,'' in the words of one expert.

It's a common quandary after natural disasters displace lots of people and destroy homes and possessions. Relief groups need very specific things, along with cash and organization. Instead, they get vases and vacuum cleaners, or interference from well-intentioned volunteers who think they're helping but are just hindering efforts.

''They're just showing up, and they're not coordinated with the agencies,'' said James McGowan, the associate director of partnerships at the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

Money is the best contribution because organizations don't have to pay to move it and can tailor spending to changing needs, McGowan said. Transporting and distributing a simple donated can of food can be $15 to $25.

The Red Cross said that by Friday, it had raised $117 million in donations and pledges, and the Salvation Army cited $5 million.

Despite relief organizations' advice, some people are still taking matters into their own hands because they can't stand to see suffering.

New York Superstorm Sandy Damage May Total $33 Billion, Says Governor

Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:14

The damage resulting from Superstorm Sandy in New York could total $33 billion, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. Cleaning operations commenced from a second storm that dumped snow, cut off power lines and plunged hundreds of thousands in darkness.

Previous estimates by forecasting firms stated that Sandy may have caused $30 billion-$50 billion in economic losses from Carolinas to Maine including property damage, lost business and living expenses. Cuomo's estimates are likely to push the bill higher, the Associated Press (AP) has reported.

Even a damage estimate of $50 billion is claimed to make Sandy the second most expensive storm after Hurricane Katrina. Sandy flooded parts of New York, New Jersey with a storm surge as high as 14 feet, killing over 100 people and leaving more than 8.5 million without power.

The Department of Energy noted that Sandy left many people in the dark than any previous storm. Besides, drivers were desperate for gas with complicated fuel deliveries.

"We are going to have to look at a ground-up redesign. With power outages, you paralyze the nation, and chaos ensues," Cuomo told AP of the power and fuel supply systems.

In particular, New York City's problems stemmed from surge of seawater that inundated utilities lying 15-20 stories below ground.

Officials announced Thursday that gasoline rationing will be implemented from Friday, following tight supplies that led to long lines and frustration at filling stations. And drivers will fill up gasoline on alternate days, based on whether their license plates end in an odd or even number.

Further, recovery efforts were blocked Thursday, after a nor'easter plunged hundreds of thousands of more people in darkness but failed to swamp shorelines anew.

From Brooklyn to storm-ravaged sections of the Jersey shore and Connecticut, about 750,000 customers were suffering without power in temperatures near freezing, some after living for days in the dark.

"We lost power last week; just got it back for a day or two, and now we lost it again. Every day, it's the same now: Turn on the gas burner for heat, instant coffee. Use the iPad to find out what's going on in the rest of the world," John Monticello, of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. told AP.

Germany's secret plot for control of the French economy

Germany is secretly drawing up plans to step in and overhaul parts of France's economy.

Berlin has instructed a powerful body of economic 'wise men' to produce a list of the changes it would impose on its neighbour.

The move fuelled fears that Berlin is making a covert power-grab to take control of the tax and spending decisions in weaker European Union economies.

Plans: Two officials from the German finance ministry said their minister had asked his advisers to draw up proposed reforms.

It came as the French central bank predicted the country would fall into recession before the end of the year in a massive blow to the eurozone's second largest economy. Output is expected to shrink by 0.1 per cent in the final months of the year.

Two officials from the German finance ministry said their finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble had asked his advisers, a council known as the 'wise men', to draw up proposed reforms.

One member of the council said the 'lack of action' by France's socialist president, Francois Hollande, in making changes to the economy was to blame for the development.

Last night the German finance ministry said that although Mr Schaeuble had raised the prospect of a report on France with members of the council, the government had not submitted a formal request for the advisers to produce a reform document.

He refused to comment on 'unofficial discussions'.

Wx Satellites

Itm gentlemen,

A quick note about story wx sats are dying. I don't have first hand knowledge but my first cousin does, and he's been talking about this for years. He designs models to predict hurricanes for noaa, and is one of the smarter people you'll ever meet. He also thinks anthropomorphic climate change is bullshit, Fwiw.

Apparently there are a couple of key specialized satellites that measure temperatures at the surface - if memory serves - that are an important input into the models. They are on their last legs and would leave us blind - modeling wise - if they die.

I completely trust and believe my brainiac cousin and hope that sheds a bit of light on the story.

Obama May Levy Carbon Tax to Cut U.S. Deficit, HSBC Says - Bloomberg.

Link to Article

Wed, 07 Nov 2012 18:14

Barack Obama may consider introducing a tax on carbon emissions to help cut the U.S. budget deficit after winning a second term as president, according to HSBC Holdings Plc.

A tax starting at $20 a metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent and rising at about 6 percent a year could raise $154 billion by 2021, Nick Robins, an analyst at the bank in London, said today in an e-mailed research note, citing Congressional Research Service estimates. ''Applied to the Congressional Budget Office's 2012 baseline, this would halve the fiscal deficit by 2022,'' Robins said.

Hurricane Sandy sparked discussion on climate protection in the election after presidential candidates focused on other debates, HSBC said. A continued Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives means Obama's scope for action will be limited, Robins said. Cap-and-trade legislation stalled in the U.S. Senate after narrowly passing the house in 2009.

North American discharges fell 1.3 percent last year amid slowing economic growth. In China, the world's biggest emitter, greenhouse gases from fuel use rose more than 9 percent in 2011, according to BP Plc (BP/) statistics published on June 13.

''Cap-and-trade has been demonized'' and Obama probably won't seek to install such a program in his second term, Richard Sandor, founder of the world's biggest carbon trading exchange in Europe, said today at the presentation in London of his book titled Good Derivatives.

New carbon trading programs in California, China and Brazil may encourage U.S. lawmakers to introduce greenhouse gas trading by about 2020, Sandor said.

''We've lost our moral authority in the U.S.,'' he said. ''You haven't here in Europe.''

Prices in the European Union carbon market, the world's biggest by traded volume, dropped to a four-year low in April on surging supply and flagging demand.

Obama and the U.S. Congress should consider a carbon tax to help meet the government's looming need for revenue, according to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions in Arlington, Virginia.

The tax would not necessarily add to the economy's total tax burden, according to Elliot Diringer, executive vice president of the research group. Such a tax may free up space for reductions in company taxes that dissuade employment, for example, Diringer said in an interview from Arlington.

''We have lots of need for new revenue to address our challenges,'' which include priorities for conservatives such as extending tax cuts, avoiding deep defense cuts, reducing the corporate tax rate, reforming tax territoriality, and deficit reduction, the group said today in an e-mailed statement.

''While Sandy's lessons are still fresh, the president should be clear about the urgency of cutting carbon emissions and strengthening critical infrastructure to protect Americans against the rising costs of climate change,'' the group said yesterday in a separate statement.

How a Staten Island Community Became a Deathtrap

Hugo Cuem mourning his brother-in-law Eugene Contrubis, who drowned in his Staten Island home. More Photos >>

Eugene Contrubis heard the many warnings about Hurricane Sandy but decided to ride it out in his drafty, one-story bungalow at 162 Kiswick Street, near the beach on Staten Island. Soft-spoken and frail, he was a retired Police Department clerk who wrote poetry, enjoyed chess and adored his nieces. When they were children, he hung a swing from a tree in his yard for them to play on.

Mr. Contrubis had lived alone since his mother's death a few years ago. He had outlasted storms before. This one would be no different.

As night fell on Monday, Oct. 29, Mr. Contrubis, 67, talked by phone with his brother-in-law. The wind had felled some branches, he reported, nothing more.

But around 6:45 p.m., water from Lower New York Bay breached the beachfront road and poured into Mr. Contrubis's neighborhood, knocking out power and eventually swallowing entire blocks.

At some point, Mr. Contrubis left a message on the voice mail of his sister, Christina Contrubis.

''The water's coming in,'' he said softly.

His body was found in his house the next day.

Mr. Contrubis was one of eight people who drowned during Hurricane Sandy in Midland Beach, a small, low-slung neighborhood of one-story bungalows and newer two- and three-story houses. The eight lived within about eight short blocks of one another '-- apparently the highest concentration of deaths in the United States attributable to the storm, which killed more than 100 people in this country.

One of the bodies was discovered only on Friday, nearly two weeks after the storm. The deaths have raised unsettling questions about why the victims were in their homes when the storm hit and whether the city bore some responsibility for their failure to evacuate. Relatives, friends and officials have replayed the events of that night, pondering whether they should have done something different '-- and whether the city needs to improve its evacuation procedures for future storms.

Midland Beach is part of Zone A, a collection of neighborhoods in the city deemed most at risk of flooding. The city declared a mandatory evacuation of the zone before Hurricane Sandy.

Last year, in the days before Tropical Storm Irene, city workers visited the neighborhood, broadcasting evacuation warnings by loudspeaker, residents recalled.

This time, officials said, city workers were sent once again to Staten Island's evacuation zones to issue warnings, some using loudspeakers. But many residents of Midland Beach said they did not hear them.

Still, it is not at all certain that such a measure, or even the police's going door to door, would have made a difference. Like most of the neighborhood's residents, the victims ignored numerous orders to evacuate, a decision that underscores an independent streak that runs deep on Staten Island.

''I tried very hard,'' Ms. Contrubis said through sobs at her brother's funeral on Monday. ''Before the storm I called him up and said, 'Gene, the storm, it looks bad!' And he said, 'Everybody's staying; nobody's leaving.' He just told me: 'I'm not going to leave. I'm not going to leave.' ''

The eight victims were mostly elderly '-- the youngest was 59. Most lived alone, and one was legally blind, paraplegic and had cerebral palsy. On that night, the neighborhood turned into a lake that was more than nine feet deep in some places '-- nearly enough to fill the victims' homes.

Councilman James Oddo, a Republican who represents the area, said he was distressed that a cluster of such deaths could occur.

''It weighs heavily on me,'' Mr. Oddo said. ''It means to a certain degree that we in government failed.''

Lulled Into Complacency

Mr. Contrubis's parents bought the bungalow at 162 Kiswick Street in the 1960s as a summer cottage. At the time, they lived in Manhattan, but Mr. Contrubis's mother loved the beach and she eventually moved to Staten Island full time. When Mr. Contrubis returned home from the military after serving in the Vietnam War, he moved in.

People have long been drawn to Midland Beach for the quietude, affordable real estate and proximity to the water.

How Global Warming Made Hurricane Sandy Worse

It makes me a little nuts when people insist because they can't draw a direct line between global warming and extreme weather, because they really don't understand how it actually works. This Mother Jones piece does an excellent job of explaining the connection:

Superstorm Sandy'--and its revival of the issue of climate change, most prominently through Michael Bloomberg's sudden endorsement'--probably aided President Obama's reelection victory last night. But at the same time, there has been a vast debate about the true nature of the storm's connections to global warming (as well as plenty of denialism regarding those connections). In fact, there has even been the suggestion, by cognitive linguist George Lakoff, that if we all stopped thinking about causation as something direct (I pushed him, he fell) and rather as something systemic (indirect, probabilistic), then we really could say with full accuracy that global warming caused Sandy. Systemically.

Following this debate, I've been struck by the strong impression that people are making things too complicated. Here's the simple truth: Leaving aside questions of systemic causation'--and sidestepping probabilities, loaded dice, atmospheres on steroids, and so on'--we can nevertheless say that global warming made Sandy directly and unmistakably worse, because of its contribution to sea level rise.

"I keep telling people the one lock you have here is sea level rise," meteorologist Scott Mandiaexplained to me recently. "It's the one thing that absolutely made the storm worse that you can't wiggle out of."

Mandia is an expert on the subject at Suffolk County Community College, and coauthor of the new book Rising Sea Levels: An Introduction to Cause and Impact.

And how do we know Mandia is right? Here's the logic.

First, according to sea level expert Ben Strauss of Climate Central, the sea level in the New York harbor today is 15 inches higher than it was in 1880. Now, to be sure, not all of that is due global warming'--land has also been subsiding. Strauss estimates that climate change'--which causes sea level rise both through the melting of land-based ice, and through thermal expansion of warm ocean water'--is responsible for just over half, or eight inches, of the total. As it happens, the estimated sea level rise seen globally since the year 1880 is also roughly eight inches.

So how, then, did global warming directly make Sandy worse? Simple: Sandy threw the ocean at the land, and because of global warming, there were about eight inches more ocean to throw. "The footprint of the flood was bigger, based on roughly eight extra inches of depth," Strauss explains'--eight inches more than there would have been in an admittedly hypothetical world in which Sandy arrived without our burning of fossil fuels or heating of the atmosphere.

[...] Consider the US Army Corps of Engineers' "depth-damage" functions, which the Corps uses to study how much flood damage grows with an increasing water level. The upshot here, says Mandia, is that "the damage is exponential, it's not linear." Or in other words, as the water level increases, the level of damage tends to rise much more steeply than the mere level of water itself.

Port Newark Incident '' Fisker Automotive Follow-Up StatementOn October 30, following Superstorm Sandy, several electric hybrid and non-hybrid cars from a variety of manufacturers caught fire and were damaged in separate incidents after flood waters receded at Port Newark (NJ), including 16 award-wining Fisker Karmas. Port Newark is one of the largest vehicle handling facilities in the U.S., and many thousands of vehicles of many makes and models were severely damaged as a result of the unprecedented flooding.

After a thorough inspection witnessed by NHTSA representatives, Fisker engineers determined that the damage to the Karmas was the result of the cars being submerged under five to eight feet of seawater for several hours that left corrosive salt in a low'‘voltage Vehicle Control Unit in one Karma. The Vehicle Control Unit is a standard component found in many types of vehicles and is powered by a typical 12V car battery. This residual salt damage caused a short circuit, which led to a fire that heavy winds then spread to other Karmas parked nearby. There were no explosions as had been inaccurately reported. The Karma's lithium-ion batteries were ruled out as a cause or contributing factor.

The Fisker Karma meets or exceeds all safety requirements for markets in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Fisker Automotive is the leading manufacturer of luxury Electric Vehicles with extended range and will continue to develop and market vehicles that deliver an unmatched combination of style, performance and economy.

Mystery at Port Newark: Why Did 17 Plug-In Cars Burn?

Amid all the damage left in Hurricane Sandy's wake is an automotive whodunit, or rather, what-dunit? What caused more than a million dollars-worth of plug-in hybrid vehicles, including 16 Fisker Karma luxury sedans, to catch fire Monday night at Port Newark?

Fisker, based in Anaheim, Calif., has had problems with vehicle fires in the past, including one incident this year that prompted the recall of more than 2,000 Karmas to replace a faulty cooling fan.

But the circumstances during the big storm were clearly unusual, raising the question of whether this latest incident is a sign of design flaws, of possible risks associated with plug-in vehicles generally or simply a result of the abuses wrought by extremely rare weather conditions '-- or some combination of the three.

In a separate incident during the storm, three Toyota Prius hybrids at Port Newark also were damaged by fire. ''One Prius out and out burned, the others just kind of smoldered and got really hot,'' Cindy Knight, a Toyota spokeswoman, said in a telephone interview on Thursday. The smoldering cars included a plug-in hybrid Prius and a conventional hybrid Prius. The car that burned was a plug-in. That's three cars out of the 4,000 Toyotas that were at Port Newark during the storm, including more than 2,128 plug-in or hybrid models. According to Ms. Knight, the fire ''likely started because saltwater got into the electrical system.''

''We can't be certain exactly what happened at the port,'' Russell Datz, a Fisker spokesman, said in a telephone interview. ''But we think being submerged in 13 feet of saltwater had something to do with it.'' The company said the cars were not charging at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

Based on photographs of the scene obtained by the blog Jalopnik, Fisker's cars were parked fairly close together, so whatever the initial cause, a fire in one car could quickly spread to others. The cars are made of aluminum, which has a lower melting point than steel, and experts said this would likely contribute to the destruction seen in the photographs. And for any modern cars loaded with electronic components, exposure to saltwater can be a problem because it is highly corrosive and conductive.

''Picture a charged AA battery,'' suggested Daniel Abraham, a lithium-ion battery expert and chemical scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. ''If you connect the positive and negative terminals with a wire, it will short the battery and generate tremendous heat in the process.''

Seawater can act like that wire. ''The conductivity of saltwater is much, much higher than that of freshwater because of all the salt,'' Mr. Abraham said. Salts dissolved in water break into positively and negatively charged ions, which then act as conductors. So if seawater connects both the positive and negative electrical terminals of a battery, it will tend to short.

''These were definitely extraordinary circumstances,'' Ms. Knight said. ''Once the salt gets in there, it's ready to do damage.'' Corrosion from the salt can damage wiring, for example, and the harness that holds the wiring, elevating the risk for fire, she said.

''This is a very large facility that inspects the vehicles, installs any accessories,'' Ms. Knight said. ''There's seaweed everywhere, all kinds of stuff that came floating in.''

Although lithium catches fire in water, this volatile reaction would almost certainly not be the culprit here because the lithium is sealed inside the Karma's battery cells, a transportation research engineer who tests plug-in vehicles said in an interview Thursday. ''The fact that these cars have big batteries in them may or may not have contributed to the issue. Any electrical system can short and cause a fire '' it doesn't need a high-voltage battery pack for that to happen.'' He spoke on the condition of anonymity because his employer does not allow members of his team to be named in the media.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey did not respond to questions about the fires.

Director-General who turned a blind eye to BBC meltdown - and paid the ultimate price

Stand off: John Humphrys (left) grills George Entwistle (right) on air
